The entertainment director on the ship of fools that constitutes so much mainstream analysis of the Middle East—I refer, of course, to Thomas Friedman—has produced a wonderful paragraph that beautifully characterizes the problem, exquisitely expressing  a Western mentality that not only makes it impossible to understand the Middle East but even to set up the question in a way people that could help people even begin to confront the truth. So perhaps it is worth disassembling. Sound like fun? Let’s go!

The paragraph is from an article entitled, “Egypt - The next India or the next Pakistan?” And that’s the first problem. Analogies are no substitute to understanding the specific reality of a country and culture, its history and balance of forces that shape the local political culture. You don’t understand Egypt by comparing it to India or Pakistan—very different places indeed—but by examining Egypt itself.

NEW YORK – There will be no shortage of rifts and sharp disagreements between Europe and Israel in 2013. During 2012 the EU and Israel clashed over construction of settlements, outlawing Hezbollah within the 27-member EU, Iran sanctions, and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s UN bid for statehood.

With respect to Europe’s support of a Palestinian state at the UN and its opposition to settlement construction, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has embraced a variation of former French president Jacques Chirac’s attitude toward the US. Chirac famously voiced his anti-Americanism, saying “I have one principle regarding foreign policy. I look at what the Americans are doing and I do the opposite. Then I am sure to be right.” Of course, Chirac’s hostility to the United States encompassed Israel.

This is the 8^th installment of the book: The Lebanese Connection: Corruption, Civil War, And The International Drug Traffic by Jonathan Marshall a fellow at Stanford Studies In Middle Eastern And Islamic Societies And Cultures. The book is a scholarly account of the Lebanese drug trade based on previously classified documents of The DEA and other US drug related agencies. As is expected, the illicit trade account reveals names and details regarding corruption and trafficking in which the Lebanese ruling class has played a major role. I imagine that the only reason that the book is banned in Lebanon is the attempt by politicians to keep the details of names and corruption out of circulation. The only reason for these summaries is the strong belief that in a free and responsible society transparency should be the norm. This is an attempt to bring in sunlight over what the politicians would like to stay covered up.

In the letter, the members insist that the time has come for this U.S. government to hold the Arab Palestinian leadership responsible for their bald refusal to comply with repeated requests from the United States government to refrain from seeking an enhanced status at the United Nations General Assembly, as is required of the Arabs under the Oslo Agreements under which it is bound.

"Teacher."  That word, in any language, has a kind of magic, as captured so perfectly by St. John.  Spoken as an appellation, as by Mary Magdalene here, it has the power to define or redefine human relationships instantly.  "Teacher" means "master" (which is how the King James version translates "Rabboni").  Its use expresses a respectful submission to a natural hierarchy in the realm of understanding; a teacher is superior to me, as one who knows.

No one designated to them this mandate, no divine command was given, and in this act it is not representing any democratic process, because in its basis, the media in Israel, is not selected and not replaced. It consists of several "gurus" who continue, for decades, almost without a real replacement. But the media in Israel hasturned surveying and mediates – for an active political body, which serve replacement for the political partiesof then. As the Left in Israel was shrinking, its influence in the media has grown, even though it was always hidden under the cover. The Left's torch wandered from open politics to hidden politics, and as it wasextinguished on one side its flame grew forcefully on the other side. That is how the Israeli media crossed the lines, removed itself from her sisters in the West. That is also how it betrayed the Israeli public, thatanticipated and still anticipates today that it reviews and covers processes…

Thus it happens that Israeli politics has become a façade only, plywood facade of allegedly democratic governance - run by puppets. The real power you have to seek in the real party, the party of "Al Ha'mishmar", of those twenty media people, who were never elected by anyone, and that their term will never end.

As members of a closed guild, they always help their own kind to move for that newspaper to another, to deliver one morning program or another, to this channel or another, and so on. That is how Galei Tzahal [Military radio stations], the educational television and other state assets fell in to the hands of the party, and how the Israeli democracy was made mockery by those who sanctity of democracy with their mouths. That is how the state of Israel became an Eastern-European shtetl; a caricature.

With Obama at the helm, USA media is just about the same.

כך קורה שהפוליטיקה הישראלית הפכה לפסאדה בלבד, חזות מדיקט של ממשל דמוקרטי-לכאורה, המנוהלת באמצעות מריונטות. את הכוח האמיתי יש לחפש במפלגה האמיתית, מפלגת "על המשמר" של אותם עשרים תקשורתנים, שמעולם לא נבחרו בידי איש, ואשר הקדנציה שלהם לעולם לא תסתיים.

בהיותם בני גילדה סגורה הם תמיד יעזרו לבני מינם לעבור לעיתון זה או אחר, להגשת תוכנית בוקר זו או אחרת, לערוץ זה או אחר, וכך הלאה. כך נפלו גלי צה"ל, הטלוויזיה החינוכית ועוד נכסים ממלכתיים בידי המפלגה, וכך הושמה הדמוקרטיה הישראלית ללעג בידי מי שרוממות הדמוקרטיה בפיהם. כך הפכה ישראל ממדינה - לשטייטל מזרח-אירופאי; לקריקטורה.

עם אובמה בנשיאות, תקשורת ארה"ב היא כמעט אותו דבר.

South Korea-North Korea: Update. South Korean technicians have been studying the debris of the North Korean rocket launched this month. They claim they have found evidence pointing to the rocket's military purposes and the North's technological ties with Iran. The technicians judge this is a joint effort to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile, South Korean officials said Sunday.

Syria: Update. Residents of Aleppo in northern Syria have reported that rebel forces have established a Saudi-style religious police around the outskirts of Aleppo. They also report at least one high-ranking member of the Saudi vice and virtue police was seen in a video.

The rebels insist the religious police are aimed at "fighting crime." The locals say that mostly they are forcing people to pray and stopping women from driving cars.

Secular rebel factions insisted that the entire story was "made up" by the regime to discredit the rebellion, but Islamist factions endorsed the move, saying that a virtue-and-vice squad is "part-and-parcel of the freedom revolution." Moreover, since Sunnis are a majority in Syria they have a right to impose such rules on society.

In 1995, the US Attorney's Office in New York had listed Mehdi as one of the unindicted co-conspirators in the trial of Sheik Rahman. Mehdi had already published a book titled "Kennedy and Sirhan: Why?", which argued that Robert Kennedy's assassin had been acting in self-defense.

I have been accused of being a hate monger bent on deforming the image of Islam. I am called a Zionist, a liar, and every insulting name a woman can be called. Although I was raised in Egypt and educated in a Muslim school system and indoctrinated on the “glories” of Islam since birth, I am also accused of being ignorant about Islam itself. In their critiques against me, many of them are practicing what is called “Taqiyya”.

Hagel, Obama and the Israeli elections

Today the National Journal reported that Obama is reconsidering his decision to appoint Chuck Hagel Secretary of Defense. As I wrote in my previous post, there is no chance that Obama will appoint a supporter of a strong Israel to any senior foreign policy post because he wouldn't appoint someone who doesn't share his basic animosity towards Israel. But in Hagel, he chose someone even more outspoken in his animus towards the Jewish state than Obama. 

Hagel's looming appointment provoked angry responses from many leading Jewish voices in the US. Whether this opposition made a difference in driving Obama to reconsider his choice is unclear. Plenty of other influential groups - including senators, members of the military and lobbyists for homosexual rights - expressed their discomfort and opposition to the prospect of having Hagel serve as Defense Secretary. Still it is notable that Hagel's possible appointment sparked an outcry among prominent American Jews and that this outcry had some unknown impact on Obama's possible decision to cancel Hagel's appointment.

Islam is on the move; it represents all that the "enlightened" west has fought to achieve for centuries. If Islam takes control over the world, as it wants to do, it will throw the free world back to the 7^th century and in time, when people will have enough of religious tyranny, same wars for freedom and liberty will have to be fought all over again.

Reuters doesn't bother to explain why Iran considers Israel its "arch-enemy." This would lead them into a discussion of Islam and Islamic antisemitism, and there's no way they're getting into that. Nor do they tell readers why Egypt's approval of the Sharia constitution would lead to a thaw in relations with Iran, since the peace treaty with Israel is ostensibly still in force. Clearly the Iranians are aware that the Muslim Brotherhood's ascendancy in Egypt and the new constitution mean that the peace with Israel is not long for this world.

The Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi to power in a June election, said an unofficial tally showed 64 percent of voters backed the charter after two rounds of voting that ended with a final ballot on Saturday.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast congratulated the Egyptians on the approval of the constitution, adding that Tehran regarded it as "a decisive step towards democracy" in Egypt, according to ISNA.
Diplomatic relations between Tehran and Cairo broke down after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution over Egypt's support for the overthrown shah and its peace agreement with Iran's arch-enemy Israel.

Note the issue sovereignty: in the history of the world, 'sovereignty' is granted by the one holding the land and not by some third party. For example, the region called Alsace-Lorraine, in France, was taken by Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and returned to France at the end of WW1, when France held the land and the gun. However, the region's predominant population were German speaking, so the issue of who had rights to the region was determined not by some third party like the League of Nations, but by who held the land and who had the stronger historic claim to the region. In this case, France has the stronger historic case, even though the population was mostly German speaking. The current border between Germany and France, including the disputed region, was established based on who held the power.

Israel “targeted” Gaza civilians with humanitarian aid during the counterterrorist Pillar of Defense operation, at the same time Gaza terrorists committed war crimes by firing missiles on Israelis, as cited by Human Rights Watch on Monday.

The IDF Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said that throughout the eight-day missile war last month, COGAT's field representatives in Gaza worked with the IDF, other branches of the Israeli defense establishment, international organizations and governmental representatives in order to provide assistance for the needs of the civilian population in Gaza.
“While Hamas actively exploits and endangers their civilians, COGAT's activities are yet another example of the measures that Israel takes to minimize casualties and harm amongst that very same population,” the IDF said.
