'Israeli gov't is uncooperative'-developing story

Abbas, Landau skeptical about talks; Netanyahu, Mitchell to meet.

Neither the Palestinian leadership nor senior Israeli officials expressed optimism, as proximity talks mediated by US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell began Wednesday.

Note: As this blog mentioned, this is Abbas' only strategy-he is so predictable-complain, blame everything on Israel, call us names and basically up the "victim" rhetoric-watch, he will see how far he can push this approach and when he fears "blow back" or enough is enough, he will announce the talks were to no avail, he does not have a partner. He will follow this with, Obama and the West must now...

The Palestinian side is already planning the breakdown of the proximity talks, National Infrastructures Minister Uzi Landau told Army Radio Wednesday morning. The Israeli government must make no more overtures to the Palestinians, they only embolden the other side and reduce the chances of reaching agreement, he said.
Landau held forth that the Israeli people must decide the fate of Jerusalem among themselves, and once they have resolved it, should not be open to having discussions about it with other states.

“We do not discuss London with the British or Paris with the French, and neither should we discuss Jerusalem with them,” he said.

What are we waiting for?

On Tuesday, the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee heard Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz, head of Military Intelligence’s Research Division, also give a very pessimistic assessment of the Palestinian Authority's intentions, saying they were “already preparing the ground for the failure” of the proximity talks.

The comments came as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas convened Fatah's Central Committee on Wednesday morning, which is expected to give Abbas permission to enter into proximity talks.

Abbas also expressed pessimism in a CNN interview, earlier Wednesday, in which he called the Netanyahu government "extreme and uncooperative." The PA president added that "since they are an elected government we have no choice to work with them," but warned that he will halt negotiations if building in the West Bank continues.

Later in the day, US Middle East envoy George Mitchell and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu were set to meet in Jerusalem on Wednesday afternoon for the first round of talks.

Comment: "Uncooperative" is code for "they would not give us what we demand, we offer nothing in return, they are therefore "uncooperative!
