Scholars to discuss ‘love’ in Islam

Around 100 Muslim scholars from 40 countries will convene today at the Dead Sea ... Sea for the 14th general conference of Aal al Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought

The conference, expected to discuss 30 research papers, revolves around the concept of “Love in the Holy Koran”, according to a statement by the institute.
The three-day conference is hosted under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah.
The participating scholars represent all Islamic sects and schools of jurisprudence, the statement said, adding that they will be deliberating the concept of love in Islam as “an ethical practice, a component of worship and a requirement for social well-being, and as a tool to promote philanthropy”.

“Love of God, love of society and others, Islamic morals and tolerance, and coexistence with non-Muslims are among the main issues to be addressed by attending scholars,” the statement said.

The conference is a component of Aal al Bayt Institute’s programme to portray the true Islam, rectify misconceptions about the religion, and foster ties and intellectual discourse among Muslim scholars.

“The conference comes at a time when the Islamic world is witnessing one of the most difficult stages as it tries to keep up with world developments,” the institute’s director, Ibrahim Shbouh, said in a previous statement.

This year, the conference will announce the winner of King Abdullah I International Award.
