Gaza – Ma’an – Islamic Jihad is skeptical over chances of the success of the 9 November Cairo talks between Palestinian factions, said Deputy of the Secretary General Ziad An-Nakhlah on Thursday.
In a statement released Thursday An-Nakhlah urged Palestinians not be too optimistic about the outcome of the Cairo talks. While optimism is essential for success, he said, obstacles and obstructions should be expected in the conciliation meetings, indicating that it will not be an easy road for any of the factions.
“There are many large obstacles in front of the dialogue [process] which could cause the dialogue to fail,” said An-Nakhlah, adding that we “cannot expect magical solutions.”
An-Nakhlah’s primary concern was that “each of the two rivals [Fatah and Hamas]” will head to Cairo believing their point of view to be correct. This is not dialogue, he said.
He supported his opinion citing the continued political arrests, and said that a positive atmosphere for the talks will be essential.
Regarding the recent Israeli media reports alleging that Hamas officials contacted Islamic Jihad members and demanded them to halt home-made projectile firing towards settlements outside of the Gaza Strip in the wake of the Israeli invasions, An-Nakhlah said “these reports are untrue and inaccurate.”
However, he added that “Hamas is still committed to the truce.”
On Islamic Jihad’s view of the truce, he said that Israel broke the truce when it invaded the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. He added that since both sides have an interest in maintaining calm than the truce may be reinstated.
Islamic Jihad will participate in Cairo talks with a joint delegation from Gaza and Damascus.
