Gaza – Ma’an – Several Palestinian resistance factions issued statements on Sunday denouncing the 1917 Balfour Declaration in which the British official promised Palestine as a homeland for individuals of Jewish descent n 1917 Arthur James Balfour was the British Foreign Secretary, and he sent what known today as the Balfour Declaration to Lord Rothschild (Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild), a leader of the British Jewish community. The letter stated that the British leaders “view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”
Palestinians consider the declaration a major factor in the creation of the state of Israel, and part of the system that ignored that Palestinian communities in the area and promised the land to Jewish people at their expense.
“Balfour’s declaration was a pledge by to give away something which was not his,” said a statement released by the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PFC), the An-Nasser Salah Addin Brigades. They demanded an official apology by the British government to the Palestinian people and called on Palestinian leaders and Arab countries to stop all negotiations with Israel.
Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Brigades reiterated the sentiments against the Declaration in a statement that said Palestinians remain attached to their ancestral lands and remember their loss on this anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration. The statement held Britain responsible for what happened to the Palestinians and demanded that the British government work to remedy its mistake.
Other military groups such as the Eagles of Palestine and Al-Mujahidin Brigades issued similar statements condemning the Balfour Declaration and affirming that Palestine is a historic right of the Palestinian people. They also urged Palestinian rivals to take the anniversary of Balfour Declaration to achieve unity.
