The Israeli security forces recently detained a young Arab-Israeli woman from Ramleh who was in contact with Fatah/Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade operatives from the Gaza Strip. They asked her to help carry out an abduction and a suicide bombing attack in Israel. 1
1. On October 29, 2008 the Israel Security Agency and the Israeli police detained Sumayya Abu Ghanem , 21, from Ramallah, who worked as a teacher's assistant in a local kindergarten. She was supposed to start studying at an Israeli university this semester.
2. Investigation revealed that in September 2008 she was contacted by Fatah/Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade operatives from the Gaza Strip who asked her to help them abduct an Israeli civilian . She told them that in principle she was willing to participate in the abduction.
3. Sumayya Abu Ghanem was also requested to help Fatah operatives infiltrate a female suicide bomber from the Gaza Strip into Israel and to bring her to a densely populated area to carry out the attack. Her detention prevented an attack which was in the advanced stages of preparation (in gross violation of the lull arrangement). On November 17 she was indicted at the Petah Tikva District Court.
4. The Palestinian terrorist organizations make extensive use of women for both the support and perpetration of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombing attacks . During the past few years a number of suicide bombing attacks by women were prevented or carried out. Among the prominent suicide bombing attacks carried out by women were the attack at the Maxim Restaurant in Haifa ( October 4, 2003 , 21 killed, 48 wounded) and the attack in the Amaqim Mall in Afula ( May 19, 2003 , three killed and 50 wounded). Recently, as part of their military buildup, the Palestinian terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip train and operate women in military capabilities, including as potential suicide bombers. 2
