KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian government is planning to empower the sharia courts in the country to make it more effective, so as to change the perception that penalties imposed under the law were far too light, reports said. Minister in the PM’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom said along with measures to empower the sharia courts, efforts would also focus on enhancing effectiveness of religious enforcement agencies.
“The main focus of these efforts was to ensure that the implementation of whipping as a punishment under shariah would be carried out flawlessly,” the minister said on Thursday.
Comment: This is occurring in a part of the world where radical/political ,your choose the term, Islam is rampant. It is in a part of the world that is displayed to the western world as one of new age, business oriented, thriving economies and very much "Western"-remember the Bond movies? We are lead to believe that this region is similar in thought, values to ours-at least through cinema and recreation advertising. however, it is not all that meets the eye. This report illustrates the real agenda of Islam-it is slowly spreading, creeping into all segments of a society and is not challenged by local authorities. A model being developed to be used elsewhere.
