The Washington D.C.-based As-Sabiqun movement, a front line organization in the campus war against Israel and the Jews, was founded in the early 1990s by Imam Abdul Alim Musa. Musa speaks frequently at colleges and universities across the country -- often at the invitation of various chapters of the Muslim Students Association. As-Sabiqun (“The Vanguard” in Arabic) is a Sunni-oriented group seeking to establish Islam “as a complete way of life in America” -- in “total, complete, and uncompromised service of Allah.” The movement’s ultimate objective is to transform the U.S. into the “Islamic State of North America” by no later than 2050.As-Sabiqun has declared its intention to “reestablis[h] the system of governance known as Khilafah, or the Caliphate,” a vast Islamic empire “patterned after the leadership exemplified by [the] Prophet Mohammad.” Aiming to “totally and completely obliterate the hold of [the spiritual ignorance of non Muslims] and enable Islam to take complete control of … the lives of all human beings on Earth,” As-Sabiqun seeks to achieve these totalistic ends by developing “the comprehensive educational system that is necessary to … direct the society toward Islamic revolution (or evolution).”
As-Sabiqun rejects “participation in the American political process” as a means of “advancing Islamic issues in the U.S.” Instead it calls for “a strong and active outreach to the people of the U.S.” -- an effort aimed at getting Americans to give up the faiths in which they were raised, and instead embrace a hermetically sealed universe of Islamic beliefs, customs, and institutions.
Among the major ideological influences on As-Sabiqun are figures such as the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (architect of the Iranian revolution and its onetime Supreme Leader) and Muslim Brotherhood founder Hasan al-Banna, whose fiery rhetoric consigned heretics to eternal hellfire while exhorting Muslims to wage violent, relentless jihad against the non-Islamic world.
Though As-Sabiqun is a Sunni entity, it has publicly voiced its support for such Shi’a movements and organizations as the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and the Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah, whose Founding Statement contains a section titled “The Necessity for the Destruction of Israel.” The Statement is frank in its genocidal intentions: “our struggle will end only when this [Zionist] entity is obliterated.”
As-Sabiqun identifies violent jihad as a vital pursuit for all Muslims worldwide: “Always cherish the intention of jihad and the desire for martyrdom in the way of Allah and actually prepare yourself for that.” This ideal echoes the organization’s founder Abdul Alim Musa’s effusive praise for those Muslims who have lost their lives as suicide bombers. dDisputing the notion that jihad is in any way antithetical to the values of authentic Islam, Musa lauds Hezbollah as “a great movement and a great organization.” He similarly refers to members of Hamas, whose founding Charter explicitly calls for the mass murder of Jews, as “very nice people” whose predominant characteristic is their “enthusiasm.”
Musa further charges that Jews were foremost among those who controlled and funded the transatlantic slave trade, and he refers to Israel as a “cancer” situated unfortunately “in the center of the crossroads of the world.”
One of As-Sabiqun’s major ongoing projects is its effort to win the freedom of Jamil Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown when he was a Minister of Justice for the Black Panther Party in the 1960s. Amin is currently serving a life sentence for the March 16, 2000 murder of a police officer. Notwithstanding Al-Amin’s long history as a revolutionary, racist thug, As-Sabiqun represents him to university audiences as a falsely accused, a “bold and daring fighter for the rights of the oppressed.”
Al-Amin is an attractive figure to As-Sabiqun because of his lifelong contempt for America, its traditions, and its allies. As-Sabiqun has been joined in its crusade on Al-Amin’s behalf by such America-hating groups as International ANSWER (which has close ties to the Marxist-Leninist Workers World Party); the National Lawyers Guild (an affiliate of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, which served as a Soviet front group during the Cold War); and the youth faction of the Revolutionary Communist Party (a Maoist group that calls for the violent destruction of America’s capitalist economic system).
All across the United States, Abdul Alim Musa and his fellow members of As-Sabiqun exploit the implied legitimacy conferred upon them by the invitations they receive – from university administrations and long-established Muslim student organizations alike – to speak at high-profile campus events. For the most part, the audiences they address are beguiled by the organization’s trendy support of “Palestinian self determination,” and unaware that its true agenda has little to do with homelands and dispossession and everything to do with a fanatical hatred of Israel and Jews and with a determination to hasten their annihilation.
