Fatah: All of Jerusalem must be returned before negotiations

The sixth Fatah General Assembly decreed on Saturday that the return of both east and west Jerusalem to Palestinian control was a "red line" which was nonnegotiable, and would need to be fulfilled before any peace talks with Israel could renew, Israel Radio reported. According to the report, a document adopted by the Fatah delegates of the assembly declared that Palestinians would "continue to be sacrificed until residents of Jerusalem are free of settlements and settlers." The document went on to state that all of Jerusalem, including the surrounding villages, belonged to the Palestinians, and lands conquered following the Six-Day war shared the same status as those located within the green line.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz blasted on Saturday the statement, saying that the declaration was a clear message to all those who maintained the "illusion that the Palestinians were prepared for compromise," Israel Radio reported.

Israel should take legal steps in response to the decree, Israel Radio reported Katz as saying. According to the report, he urged the government to expand the municipal authority of Jerusalem to include Ma'aleh Adumim, Givat Ze'ev, Gush Etzion, and Be'tar. In addition, the minister encouraged further construction in surrounding neighborhoods so as to increase Jewish presence in the city.

Earlier in the week, Katz blasted the Fatah General Assembly following media reports which predicted that the delegates would adopt hardline stances deemed unacceptable to Israel.

"The refusal to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state, the demand for a withdrawal to the 1967 lines and for the full right of return for Palestinian refugees - this means wiping Israel out of existence," he said.

Comment: Abbas et al know this silly request is a non-starter. Why offer such a proposal? Two reasons-for local political consumption-he needs to appear tough with his "own people" and Hamas. Second, he will observe the Obama administration and see what and how they will respond-those of us who have many suspicions of Obama and team will also be watching.

Abbas's new platform,is just the first step in a full merger with Hamas. My inclination is that Turkey will replace Egypt as the mediator of what appears to be an inevitable joining of forces, between Hamas & Fatah. This certainly will stymie any American plan.

How funny... It's akin asking all of West Bank and the Strip back! Would they agree? Come on...
