Iran MP adds voice to nominees rejection

A top Iranian lawmaker has given rise to earlier speculations that some of the cabinet nominees proposed by President Ahmadinejad may fail to win Parliament's vote of confidence. The First Vice-Speaker of Iran's Parliament, Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard, told reporters on Sunday that it was 'likely' that the Parliament (Majlis) would reject about five of the introduced nominees.

The senior parliamentarian said there was interaction between the government and the Parliament concerning the vote of confidence but asserted that the Parliament had to take certain guidelines into consideration when studying the qualifications of the proposed nominees.

Earlier on Thursday, Mohammad-Reza Bahonar, the second Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, also warned that several proposed ministers might be rejected by the assembly.

"Some of my colleagues and I believe that about five of the ministers proposed by President Ahmadinejad will not win the vote of confidence from the Parliament," he added.

President Ahmadinejad submitted his final list of candidates for his next cabinet late on Wednesday. Parliament members will examine the list from August 23 before they hold a confidence vote on August 30.

The list of the 21 ministers sees 11 new ministers, a move interpreted as being in line with President Ahmadinejad's earlier promise to bring about major changes in the new cabinet.

In a televised address to the nation on Thursday night, President Ahmadinejad defended the proposed line-up, arguing that his picks were the most qualified for the posts.
