A thought for Shabbat August 15, 2009

Nurit Greenger

We often hear the story of people, presently Christians or Muslims, who discovered that their ancestors were Jews who were forced to convert to other religions. This story can be repeated many, many thousands of times. If these people, the descendant of Jews, the Jewish Nation lost to other forceful proselytizing religions, will find their Jewish roots and finally return to Judaism, the Jewish Nation will exponentially and substantially grow. It makes my heart jump for joy knowing that there are many such people, whose ancestors were Jewish, now discovering their Jewish roots and are in the process of finding the road back to Judaism or already embraced Judaism and have returned home. By embracing Judaism, these ancient-new Jews have taken upon themselves the mightiest responsibility that all Jews have: to make sure that our descendants remain strong, proud Jews.

We, Jews, with our Homeland Israel are performing daily an act of defiance and triumph. Each Shabbat we rejoice that the Inquisition, Pogroms and the Holocaust have gone and we remain to tell the ‘tale’ and carry on Jewishness and Judaism.

We, Jews, have yet another very important job to perform: to bring the present time ‘Converso-Marranos’ Jews to realize and understand that they have questionable authority to expect their children to observe Judaism when they are not strong enough to give up wealth and status for Torah! Like the Jews in the 15th Century in Spain, they will pay a high price for trying to make the Torah "fit" with their lifestyles instead of embracing Jewish heritage and trusting that God will ultimately take care of all the details.

It is because of the merit of our ancestors who died "al Kiddush Hashem," sanctifying God's name that we have the privilege to be full-fledged Jews and practice our religion anywhere we live. Should the course of history repeat itself, we have a home to call our own: the Jewish State of Israel and no one can force us to convert, leave or die!

For 2,000 Jews died "al Kiddush Hashem" and today Jews are living "al Kiddush Hashem." Amen and Amen!

Never Again!
