Lebanese Cabinet endorses Hizbullah's right to keep arms

Lebanon's new government has endorsed Hizbullah's right to keep its weapons.

The decision came Wednesday in a statement that lays out the government's goals for the next four years. Lebanon's government is a shaky coalition of Western-backed factions and the militant group Hizbullah and its allies.

Wednesday's move is the latest sign that Hizbullah has no intention of meeting UN resolution 1701 that ended the 2006 war with Israel. The resolution required Hizbullah to give up its arsenal.

Hizbullah's refusal to disarm has generated division within Lebanon as well as concern in Israel, which says it is preparing to deploy a defense system to shoot down rockets from Lebanon.

On Monday, the group's leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said Hizbullah would improve its weapons capabilities to face off any Israeli threat, adding that armed struggle was the only way to regain "Arab lands" captured by Israel.

Comment:This now means that in the next war no targets are off limits to Israeli forces. Hizzbollah has joined the government and thus Lebanon is open to full responsibility. Note also that Hizzbollah has now also placed Lebanon, as a country, in violation of UN 1701. Finally Hizzbollah has threatened Israel again and indicated that Israel is occupying Arab lands. Iran is the patron of these developments-this story continues to emerge.
