Response from UC-I to my letter

Note: This is obviously the obligatory letter a University puts out to respond to a letter of upset-you will read that they chose not to address any, not one, of my points-no wonder the University system in California, once a noble and academic authentic group of higher learning sites is crumbling before our eyes.

February 18, 2010

I am writing to acknowledge your email to the University of California, Irvine’s chancellor about Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren’s speech on February 8th. We appreciate your concerns and want to thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

UC Irvine subscribes to the highest principles of academic inquiry and discourse. We strive to be, in all things, a values-based community. Those values include respect, fairness and civil discourse. The campus also provides a forum for the free discussion of the tough issues facing our world. As it has done in the past, the university will work diligently to ensure the right of free speech is protected for everyone at the university.

The Chancellor has made several public statements on this matter which you can read at www.vcsa.uci.edu/FreeSpeech. Updates will continue to be available at that web site.

Thank you again for your input and consideration of this issue.

Sincerely,

Ramona Agrela
Associate Chancellor / Chief of Staff
University of California, Irvine

Guest Comment: I understand that UC-I's definition of freedom of speech is quite different from ours. As a former Adjunct Professor at this once fine University, it is with a heavy heart that I share its lack of academic integrity and decency with regards to an honest dialogue regarding difficulties in the ME. Faculty at the campus are embarrassed by the behavior of its administrators. Inquiry, sound and reasonable interactions are no longer possible in today's climate at UC-I. The University has become identified with arrogant, condescending individuals whose agenda is to disrupt, revise and intentionally misrepresent an entire people, a democratic country and the meaning of civility. They allow behavior on their campus they would never permit inside their own personal homes. All of this in the name of UC-I's aberrant definition of freedom of speech. They have a misplaced sense of ethical justice and donors and others should follow their conscious with regard to continued financial support.
