Under no circumstances is global warming ever to be compared to a religion. It’s cold, hard science, you see: strictly empirical, reliably objective, and certain to be reevaluated whenever new evidence comes to light. Nothing is taken on blind faith. Seriously, it’s all about-
Y’know what? I can’t do this any more. The Left’s doctrine of infallibility has always been bogus, and now we have more to add to this particular denomination’s psychological profile. Lefty outfits like Huffington Post and Think Progress are angry that Sean Hannity and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) recently took a few light jabs at the DC weather’s expense. From HuffPo: The former presidential candidate called up Fox News host Sean Hannity to confide some of his frustrations. “I’m snowbound and going crazy!” McCain told Hannity. “I think about those old trappers that used to winter over, I don’t know how they did it.”
Hannity responded: “I guess global warming kept you out of the studio tonight.” (Click here to watch Colbert rip into this meme(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/11/bill-nye-on-rachel-maddow_n_458597.html) and here to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy explain why recent snowstorms don’t disprove global warming.)
Think Progress video, entitled, “McCain doesn’t challenge Hannity’s global warming denierism” [sic.]:
Hmm, what else is simply not to be joked about, where playful jabs made in passing about conventional wisdom can land you in hot water? Hard-line religion! Reality check: not every scrap of small talk is meant to be a public policy claim. Sometimes talking about the weather is just, well…talking about the weather.
Personally, I’m waiting for some eco-nuns in green habits to whack Hannity and McCain’s hands with rulers (made of recycled plastic, naturally).
Seriously, though, there’s a fair point to be made that we shouldn’t infer long-term climate patterns from individual snapshots of the weather. Unfortunately for the Left, our skepticism isn’t founded on anecdotes. We’re skeptical because the credibility of the high priests has been collapsing before our very eyes. First ClimateGate shamed East Anglia University’s Climate Research Unit. Then we leaned that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA’s Goddard Institute both had issues of their own. Most recently, we’ve been learning all sorts of things about how the United Nations’ Intergovernmental on Climate Change has reached its conclusions (who knew that the scientific method meant passing off student dissertations and advocacy group propaganda as settled science?).
Get a life, guys. You’ve been cooped up in your offices too long; why not take a break and grab some fresh air? But if you do, you’ll probably need a jacket. I hear it’s chilly out.
