Turkey Ready to Increase Energy Cooperation with Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkey announced preparedness to boost its cooperation with Iran in the energy sector and link its northeastern port city of Trabzon to Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.

The remarks were made in a meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Ankara on Tuesday. Mottaki is in Ankara to attend the 21st meeting of Iran-Turkey joint Economic Commission.

During the meeting, Erdogan described the relations between Iran and Turkey as to be in the best possible conditions, and said, "The agreements of the 21st joint economic commission meeting between the two countries will be important and Turkey is ready to ink the required agreements on energy cooperation and linking Trabzon port to Bandar Abbas."

Noting that the two countries enjoy good mutual cooperation in economic field, he reiterated that the level of trade ties between Iran and Turkey surpassed $10bln last year.

"There is a strong will on both sides to increase the amount to $30bln," Erdogan added.

Mottaki, for his part, announced Iran's willingness to establish ties between the different economic sectors on both sides and to exchange delegations with Turkey at different levels to the same end.

He further underlined that friendship with Turkey is important to Iran, and said that Tehran values cooperation with Turkey in all the various grounds.

Comment: Iran continues to position itself against any kind of Western embargo-I am afraid all of our posturing these last couple of years has given Iran time to "arm" itself against any actions we take. Sanctions will not work and I question the degree to which the West really were concerned. I think they have spent more energy and time on keeping Israel from attacking Iran.
