Cartoonist behind "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" backs down: "I said that I wanted to counter fear and then I got afraid"

"The only thing we have to fear..." An update on this story. "Cartoonist Molly Norris Erases 'Draw Muhammad' Gag," from MyFox9, April 26 (thanks to all who sent this in):

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - In more fallout around the decision by Comedy Central to censor an episode of "South Park" that contained comedic depictions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a cartoonist has now censored herself .

Seattle artist Molly Norris originally posted on her website a cartoon showing many different objects - including a purse, a domino, a coffee cup and a spool of thread - claiming to be a likeness of Muhamma Norris said that May 20 would be the first annual "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" and created a fictional group, Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor, to sponsor the event. She dedicated the illustration to Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of "South Park."

She sent the illustration to some bloggers and talked to a local radio host, saying "it's a cartoonist's job to be non-PC."

Now Norris has backed off from that position. She no longer has the illustration on her website and she claims responses to the idea were overwhelming. Instead she has a drawing of herself, with various word balloons containing her feelings about the incident, including "I said that I wanted to counter fear and then I got afraid."

Too late: the paints and brushes await:

But she may have started something she can't stop. Others have taken up the cause of "Everybody Draw Muhammed Day."

Reason.com's blogger Michael C. Moynihan says he will be contributing artwork and will post fans' work on his site as well. The fictional group Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor now has its own site that already contains some irreverent illustrations of Muhammad.

A Facebook page devoted to "Draw Muhammad Day" has followed Norris's lead and backed away from the idea, but fans on the site are still arguing about it.

A rival Facebook page, Ban Draw Muhammad Day , also contains ongoing arguments on both sides of the issue.

On Sunday night's episode of "The Simpsons", the "South Park" issue was mentioned in the opening credits when Bart writes on the chalkboard in school. The chalkboard scrawl reads: "South Park - We'd stand beside you if we weren't so scared."

In the words of Homer himself: "[You] found my one weakness: that I'm weak! "

I've been following this story closely too. At first, I was thinking of what a brave young woman she was. Standing up for Freedom of Speech and all that. Now I'm wondering why she bothered. Is it possible she never thought anything would come of it. Maybe blogs allow us that little space to journal, knowing 20-50 people are checking it out in a day, and then suddenlyit goes viral. From anonymous to nation's news - I think she just got spooked.

You people think your brave with coming out with ideas like this and this is what leads to hatred towards religiion and this is what is creating the wars in teh world. Then when some sort of attack occurs, including terrorist attacks...everyone backs away and weeps. having no fear doesnt mean stand up and fight for freedom of speech.. coz drawing pictures isnt freedom of speech. having no fear is being able to stand up to a muslim and say, we are wrong. and here is our apology.thats strength and thats character.

Anonymous-this speaks to your bravery, not giving us your name. "You people", hmm I guess you mean those of us willing to challenge Islam-this does not require bravery, rather it demands integrity. You know as well as so many of us now know, these actions are not thecause for hateful acts by Muslims against the non-Muslim population, they are used as a "justification"!

In 2007 Islam and Judaism's holiest days overlapped 10 days. Muslims racked up 397 dead bodies in 94 terror attacks across 10 countries during this time...while Jews worked on their 159th Nobel Prize.

don noris- what do u know about the rest of the world or should i say muslim world. i m a muslim, and i hate the idea of being extreme, i had argument with my muslim friends about this issue. i chose to ignore it totaly, but for curosity i went through some web sites read a few comments, i can feel the anger that slowly building up inside me for insulting mohammed(pbuh), you know what i acctualy can understand how some of these events like this one creat extremist and provoke anger from a peace loving comunity. well i aint bothered about what u guys say, my policy is "i respect u, i wont harm u, i will help if u need it but all under one condition do the same to me". but mark my word its hard to always follow it, but i m very tolerant. so ur comments about muslims attacking or their terror attacks... go and live ur life in those countries, live a life that those ppl live... then i would like u to try to make a comment like that. btw this will be my first and last message about this stupendous idea started by molly. coz more i want to write more i will be involve.. more i get involve more anger will buildup inside me.... more anger will lead me to hate ppl... and i dont want that.

Anonymous-why do you not identify yourself-you mispell my name, make outrageous charges and then justify violence because you get upset by reading words-do you not understand how absurd this is? I am angry that in the name of Islam your people have murdered thousands upon thousands of my people, I am angered with those who insult me by wanting to put a 13 story mosque at the site of the twin towers BUT I will not go kill anyone because I am upset or have my feelings hurt. How barbaric and you ask me to understand-no more!I stand against such barbaric thinking and senseless acts of violence-enough of your threats, you do not ...

Look who is talking and from where who is the current biggest terrorist state of so-called
Israel) he is talking. Those who murdered thousands of innocent Palestinians by giving the reason that someone else did the same with them (even if it was the reason then they should do it to Europe who was the responsible for it). And please just read history books again and if you are talking about the thousands of killing of your people [even the number you tell, there are many statistics who deny it, but then you do not allow to speak about it because then the so-called FREEDOM OF SPEACH disappear somewhere) it was the Christian Europe who did this to you and to other hundreds of thousands of people.
And you should also upset most with Christian Europe and Christian US as the Hilter was also a Christian by religion, was not he???

GS Don Morris, Ph.D. listen chief, your people were not winning nobel prizes, they were blowing coke and did you hear about the rabbis in secaucus, NJ who were forcing people to sell their body parts to them for free?! its ok though because I helped arreset them and put them in jail were they belong. Anonymous is being nice to you and your being a dick to him. Muslims don't kill jews, trust me chief I nailed more Jewish girls in college than you ever had in your life, infact I probably nailed most of them while you were out getting your phd haha, take care and peace be upon you ya habibi!

Again anonymous you refuse to identify yourself-you again justify violence because someone dares to ask questions,to use only words-this is one reason why so many people in the world question the notion that Islam is a religion of peace and you are certainly validating their concerns.

Ahmed-I really do not have to write anything-your words speak to who you are-you made all my points with this "glowing" report of your character-thank you

your way of ''FREEDOM of Speech'' is hurting others religious views and then sayin''oh..they cudnt take our views,,how childihs???''?? ..if you give that much freedom..why is there a ban on hijabs and full faced veils to muslim citizens? Where is your freedom of speech then??

GS Don Morris, Ph.D./Chana Givon said...

Anonymous-again you make my point-if someone disagrees with you the response is name calling. Perhaps this is a cultural concept, freedom of speech in the West allows for disagreements-perhaps you disagree with this, fine-however, to suggest that this hurts others religious views is untrue-as I say, you very clearly make my point-thank you

So, words merit a threat-again, thank you for making my point

sorry molly, but you prolly end up like the van goh douch, and i cant say i feel bad for you, why would you insult a peoples religion? why? screw "free speech" we both know that free speech is supposed to be used against the tyranny and oppression of corrupt govts, not to be used to insult and humiliate and alienated 1.8 billion people. you have made your bed, now you will face the consequences, too bad "free speech" cant protect you for the rest of your life...

GS Don Morris, Ph.D./Chana Givon said...

Anonymous-hiding with no name, making threats no longer causes us fear-what it does is reveal who you are and what you stand for-you lack integrity and have no idea what freedom of speech means-we will no longer back down to your evil.
