Is it Masada all over again?

October 4, 2010

By Nurit Greenger

According to Josephus, King Herod built Masada in 37-31 BC as a refuge for himself, in case his Jewish subjects rise up against him. In 66 AD, at the beginning of the Jewish revolt against the Romans, a group of Jewish rebels extremists Zealots, called the Sicarii, captured Masada from the Roman garrison stationed there. For two years the Sicarii used Masada as a basis from there they raided and harassment Roman and Jewish communities alike, with Eleazar ben Yair as their leader. n 73, the Roman governor of Judaea, Lucius Flavius Silva, marched against Masada with the Roman legion X Fretensis and laid siege to the fortress. After positioning troops all around the fortress, he built a circumvallation wall and then a siege embankment against the western face of the plateau, using thousands of tons of stones and beaten earth. The Sicarii had no skills or equipment to fight the Roman Legion. The wall was completed in the spring of 73 or 74 AD, after about two or three months of siege, allowing the Romans to finally break through the wall of the fortress with a battering ram. But, as the Romans entered the fortress they found that the defenders of the fort, about a thousand in number, set fire to all the buildings and preferred a mass suicide to captivity or certain defeat. This version of the story of the siege of Masada was told by two women who were saved from the mass suicide and hid in a water pit with five children.

The description of the siege by Josephus is very detailed, its main, most dramatic part, is in two parts speech by the Sicarii leader, Elazar Ben Yair, in which Elazar argues in his right to freedom, and its main argument is the priority of liberty over life:

"We were born to die and we gave birth to our descendants so they shall die too; and death no one will escape even the happiest of people. But life of disgrace and slavery and one that sees the disgrace of his wife and children - all these evils were not cut for a person from his covenant; and only from the timidly of heart people bear these terrible suffering; as they refused to choose death in the time of opportunity... No more our hands are cuffed and they are holding the sword; they will be our salvation this time! And we shall know death before becoming slaves to our enemy; and free we shall remain when we depart from the countries of the living, we, our wives, our sons…!"

In Israel the famous adage is: Masada shall never fall again, meaning the State of Israel will never fall into foreign hands again.

Masada is the Jewish Nation symbol of commitment, of holding grounds, not giving up no matter what.

Pursuing the story of Masada and the symbol it serves the Jewish Nation, we are asking Benjamin Netanyahu, where is the Masada in you!?

Israel has nothing more to give but life or death; we choose life! Israel can only offer peace, the peace the Palarabs do not wish to have. What do you choose for your country Netanyahu?

Israel, you have one way to go: build Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria like never before and do not negotiate one iota of land, until one day, if ever, the Palarabs tell the world: we want unconditional peace with Israel and we shall deliver peace.
