Abbas congratulates Kuntar's family

JPost.com Staff and AP , THE JERUSALEM POST

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday sent his regards to the families of Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar and the other four Lebanese prisoners scheduled to be transferred to Hizbullah.

Abbas praised the prisoner swap and congratulated the Kuntar family.

Similarly, the prime minister of the Hamas government in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, called the convicted murderer's mother Wednesday morning to congratulate her on the imminent release of her son, Hizbullah's Al-Manar television station reported. Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinians handed out sweets and waved yellow Hizbullah flags to celebrate what they saw as a major victory for the Lebanese terror group, who were preparing a hero's welcome for the five prisoners returning home in exchange for the bodies of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.

Those marching in Gaza, as well as Haniyeh, headed toward the home of a former cellmate of Kuntar, Jaber Wishah.

Wishah's 72-year-old mother, Handoumeh, informally "adopted" Kuntar, visiting him regularly while her son was in jail.

"If only I could go to Lebanon and kiss Samir's forehead," said Handoumeh, surrounded by well-wishers at her home in central Gaza. Behind her were two large pictures of her son and Kuntar.

"Israel must pay the price, and learn to pay the price for an exchange," said Haniyeh, referring to kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit. "There is a captive Israeli soldier. Thousands of our sons are in prison. We want to end this as quickly, even faster than, the Israelis, but let them meet our demands," Haniyeh said.

In Gaza, residents listened to radios broadcasting a live feed from Hizbullah's al-Manar television in Lebanon. Televisions in coffee shops stayed on Arab news channels and a local souvenir shop was decked out in Hizbullah and Lebanese flags.

Adding to Nasrallah's popularity among Palestinians, the Hizbullah chief included in the prison swap the remains of Dalal Mughrabi, a Palestinian woman whose 10-member squad killed 36 Israelis in a 1978 terror attack.

Palestinians refer to her as "the Bride of Palestine."
