Israel has agreed to swap 200 "long-term" Palestinian Authority terrorists with Hamas in exchange for the release of IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit, according to a report on Thursday by the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency. Among those to be released would be Fatah Tanzim arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life sentences for the murder of five Israelis and wounding of dozens of others. He was also responsible for the deaths of some 25 other Jews.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak allegedly conveyed Israel's acquiescence to the deal with Hamas at his meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday.
This list also includes, according to a Hamas official quoted by Ma'an, "many [others] who are leaders in [PA] military organizations."
Sources quoted in the report said the first 100 prisoners will be released by Israel when Shalit, kidnapped by Hamas terrorists in June 2006, is transferred to Egyptian security personnel. The other 100 terrorists will be freed upon Shalit's return to Israel.
"Israel reached consent that Shalit's file cannot be addressed militarily," said a Hamas official quoted by Ma'an.
Israeli officials have been tight-lipped on the claim. Spokesman David Baker of the Prime Minister's Office told Arutz-7 the government had no comment on the report.
Comment: No, stop this madness. This is a terrible road to start traveling down. I am not insensitive to the Shalit's grief or his ongoing illegal kidnapping. This will only increase soldier kidnapping-time to have some courage Israel!! .
