Asher Yarden: Israel fights for its survival; Hamas is fighting to promote terrorism

Asher Yarden

HOUSTON - "The media reporting of Israel's actions in Gaza, after not reporting the Gazan bombing of Sderot, is like trying to explain America's entry into World War Two without mentioning the bombing of Pearl Harbor!"
This quote, taken from the Jerusalem Post's cartoon strip, does an efficient job of conveying the lack of understanding of much of the world's opinion, as to why Israel has been operating in Gaza. In no way is Israel launching this offensive to retaliate, punish, or further the loss of life; neither is Israel attempting to reoccupy Gaza.
Rather, Israel has simply been pushed into a corner, after all other means have failed to put an end to the daily, indiscriminate missile, rocket and mortar fire, aimed at killing as many Israeli civilians as possible. Israel prefers peace over conflict, however, can no longer stand idly, as more than 300,000 of its citizens live under the constant threat of Hamas terror attacks from Gaza.
As President-elect Barack Obama stated, "If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that, and I expect Israelis to do the same."
Unfortunately, Israel has exhausted every single option, other than military action. In August 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza strip, in order to give real, lasting peace an opportunity to prevail. Instead of peace, Hamas reciprocated this unprecedented action with terror almost since day one, having fired over 7,000 missiles and mortars at Israeli communities since that time.
Each attack giving Hamas' targets, Israeli civilians, only fifteen seconds to find cover, fifteen agonizing, terrifying, unforgettable seconds. And once again, those who are running frantically during the sounding of what in Israel is known as "color red," are not military personnel, but rather babies asleep in their cribs, children on their way to school, mothers and fathers taking care of their home, and employees going about their daily work.
There is a major difference between Israel's offensive and Hamas' terror attacks. Hamas targets civilians. Israel, on the other hand, takes painstaking precautions to minimize civilian casualties, while making every effort to strike only known terrorist personnel and illegal weapons caches. Israel even went so far as to send out mass text messages and voice mails, in Arabic, warning of the impending military operation, and urging Palestinians not affiliated with Hamas to stay clear of known Hamas strongholds.
A country at war, giving its adversary advance notice of an attack, is something unheard of in the history of warfare. Israel, and only Israel, practices this gesture, in order to preserve as much innocent life as possible. When Hamas cowers behind the women and children, one must ask the question, who is really at fault? Make no mistake about it, the loss of any life, especially that of innocent people put into harms way by Hamas is tragic; however, Israel cannot allow those terrorist acts carried out by Hamas to continue unabated, even if that means destroying weapons holds that have been deliberately placed in populated civilian centers. Even if that means taking the life of a terrorist who chooses to surround himself with children, with the knowledge that should he be targeted, he will at least be able to impose a moral hardship on Israel. Even if that means damaging a mosque or a university lecture hall that is being used as a staging and planning area to carry out murderous terror attacks against Israeli men, women, and children.
And all this terror brought upon Israel at the hands of Hamas occurs and recurs on a daily basis despite the fact that not a single Israeli, citizen or soldier, remains in the Gaza Strip since August 2005.
Come to think of it, I take that back. One Israeli does remain in Gaza - Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit -who was brutally kidnapped in June 2006, when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, murdered two of Shalit's fellow soldiers, and dragged him into Gaza, injured, where he remains hostage today, being denied even the most basic human rights, including even visits by the Red Cross.
This alone gives you ample context for understanding the current situation and the nature of Hamas.

The fact that you pretend the only issue is terrorists shooting missles at Israel reveals your dishonesty. Why would they shoot missles ? What about Israel's siege of Gaza ? Can you honestly say the palistinians have no legitmate grievances ?

You use confused logic. I do not pretend at all-we left Gaza some time ago-Hamas started firing at us as we exited and never stopped-pretend, I think not! We gave the population a 100 million business, in tact-do you know how many "Palestinians this business employed" We gave them a "turn key" business-what did you do? Within days, you destroyed it-huh? I am not pretending! Why do they shoot? Read Hamas covenant, listen to television, read their documents, examine with some sense of honesty their chidren camps, their school curricula-shall I continue? Until you acknowledge the culture of hate and violence created, not by us, but by your brother, we cannot have a dialogue. Until you stand up, with courage rather than hate, to the evil being propagated upon the Palestinian people, nothing will change. Yes, we shall defend our families against such terror-no sane, caring person can disagree. do you have legitimate complaints-yes, but look inward and you will "discover" the culprit-it is not Israel! Time for you and your colleagues to find within you courage and muster the will to demand from your "leaders" enough is enough or keep on being drenched in hate and direct it toward us-this is the easy thing to do rather them admit who is to blame! doc
