Courage to admit mistakes and force the truth‏

My Dear Fellow Americans,

Have we forgotten that we live in a democracy where we have the right to question the leaders of our country or the wisdom of their policies? Are we, as Jews, to cower in fear of arousing the anger of the president that we, in a very significant way, helped to put in the White House? We, who so proudly voted for the first black US president and who so eagerly sought the end of racism in our country, seem now to fear the backlash of racist antisemitism for questioning that President's reversal of US policy toward Israel! It will be to our everlasting shame if we do not speak out, if we do not learn the lessons of history. These times are a repeat of the 1930's when the policy of the day was rank appeasement of a tyrant who openly stated his hatred of the Jews and enacted his antisemitic incitement. Lest we forget, that tyrant succeeded in bringing about his infamous Final Solution for the Jews and starting the Second World War! So, too, today we see just such a tyrant on the world stage threatening Israel's annihilation and a world response of appeasement, now led by President Obama.

Are we to sit by while the President chooses to set up Israel as the obstruction to peace, instead of forcefully addressing the Iranian nuclear threat? Is Israel's insistence on construction within the existing settlements only for natural growth and not to expand construction beyond the borders of those settlements really the cause for the failure of the latest peace plan? Can we American Jews be a party to a policy that ignores all the true, painful concessions Israel has already made, while giving a pass to the Palestinians who haven't even changed their charter from calling for the destruction of Israel? Can we forget that Israel, on at least two separate occasions has offered the Palestinians statehood with unheard of generous conditions which the Palestinains, on each occasion, rejected? Are we now supposed to remove all our settlements from the West Bank, which would put all of Israel within the range of Palestinian missiles and believe that the Palestinians would honor any agreement they entered into with us after the tragic results of our painful withdrawals from Lebanon and Gaza? First the Second Lebanon War ensued and later all of Southern Israel suffered for eight long years from rocket bombardment emanating from that territory it evacuated in Gaza until Israel finally fought back with the Gaza Operation, Cast Lead..

And yet President Obama and his emmisaries blame Israel for obstruction of the peace process, and want to ram down Israel's throat the Saudi Peace Plan. And what does the Saudi Peace Plan entail? 1. Israel has to withdraw completely from every bit of territory it captured in the wars of aggression launchcd against it by the Arabs, including those settlement blocks that Israel deems absolutely necessary for its defense. This would effectively return its borders back to the indefensible l948 borders. 2. Jerusalem has to be divided. 3. Israel has to accept the resettlement of five- or- more- million Palestinian refugees (this includes the generations of their children since fleeing to the Arab lands) This would, of course, put an end to Israel's existence as a Jewish state. 4. What's more, the Saudi king stated that there would be no promised recognition of Israel before and until all of the above demands had been carried out.

Now President Obama said on numerous occasions that he was going to bring "truth" to the Israeli/Palestinian dispute. Mr. Obama is a truthful man.

Yet why, just to mention one instance, did the President claim that the Palestinian Refugee problem was created by Israel's founding? In the service of truth, how could he gloss over that the Palestinian Refugee problem was created by the Arabs' refusal to accept the founding of Israel and by their consequent seven-army attack on the nascent state. Many of the Palestinians living in the territory of Israel responded to the exhortations of the invading armies to flee to the surrounding Arab countries so that the invading armies would have a clearer path to destroy the Jewish state and its Jewish inhabitants. The fleeing Palestinians were promised that they could return after the war to a territory free of all Jews. When that failed, the Arab countries decided not to absorb the Palestinian refugees into their societies, but to keep them in refugee camps as an everlasting sore with which to batter Israel in world opinion and to have a compliant UN pick up the tab.

And, since the President is so fond of oratorical symmetries, why did he neglect to mention that about the same number of Jewish refugees were created when they were expelled by the Arab countries of their birth at the time of the founding of Israel and that they were all absorbed into its society by the tiny, impoverished Jewish state?

If we Jews have any real sense of morality and honesty, we must discern the real truth and insist on it. If the President is the great man many think he is, he will listen to us and take our objections and positions into consideration. In a democratic society we have the right to make them known.. The lives of our fellow Jews depend on it. We must not match their courage with our cowardice.
