Heads up America-more misdirection re: Israel-what will you do to mitigate this effort?

Taxing My Patience

On April 15th (Tax Day), the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is dispatching volunteers to dozens of post offices nationwide, where they will hand out pamphlets informing Americans that “You, as an individual tax payer, will be giving Israel an average of $19.19 when you file your taxes this year!” Granted, Americans are generally opposed to foreign aid of any kind. Still, I seriously question whether this campaign will provoke the anticipated level of outrage. (“Wait! I could have spent that money on a large, two-topping pizza?!? Damn the Zionist Cabal!”)

And, as long as we’re playing goofy political math games, 75 percent of U.S. aid to Israel is spent in the United States, which means that “You, as an individual tax payer, will be giving Israel an average of $4.79 when you file your taxes this year!” (You could have used that money to buy these novelty “Hello Kitty” band-aids! Where is the outrage?)

Of course, the pundits who like to spout these types of numbers routinely overlook the billions of dollars worth of weapons that the United States and other countries sell to the Arab world. (The Bush administration’s promise of $30 billion of military aid to Israel from 2009 through 2018 followed the announcement of a $20 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia.)

A suggestion for self-proclaimed peace activists: You might want to focus your attention on the spiraling arms race in the Middle East, which is being caused by the famously “peaceful” regime in Iran. As the Congressional Research Service [pdf] notes:

Ironically, the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, though it has partially aligned Israeli and Sunni Arab interests in deterring a shared rival, also may be exacerbating Israeli fears of a deteriorated Qualitative Military Edge, as Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states dramatically increase defense procurements from U.S. and other foreign suppliers.
And that’s what really adds up to trouble.

Comment: Best not dismiss this action. It is another in a series of tactics, organized and well funded, to isolate Israel. Furthermore, it is meant to divide and conquer specific American Jewish organizations. Here is a fact: Israel receives only some military aide-this year around 3 billion dollars. By agreement, 70% of these dollars must purchase USA made weapons and military materials. The "aide" returns to the USA and provides jobs for tens of thousands of Americans. BTW, this is not true of the aide given outright to the Arab countries!! So, the $19.95 "gift" they say goes to Israel is a gift to an American worker-it is called a job!
