To Be A Free Nation In Our Homeland

The name of the State of Israel national anthem is Hatikvah, which means The Hope; Hebrew: הַתִּקְוָה‎.

The anthem was written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Jew from Zolochiv, Galicia, today Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. Imber moved to the Land of Israel in the early 1880s.

The anthem's theme revolves around the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to be a free and sovereign people in the Land of Israel, a national dream that would eventually be realized with the founding of the modern State of Israel in 1948. In the anthem there is one sentence that sums it all up:

לִהְיוֹת עַם חָפְשִׁי בְּאַרְצֵנוּ Lihyot ‘am chofshi be’artzeinu To be a free people in our land.

To be free means Jews can live free in the land of their Forefathers. To be free to defend oneself, to be free to speak Hebrew, to be free as Jews, free to practice the Jewish religion, to be free to walk heads high in the Jewish State of Israel the only country each Jew can call it his own home.

With this precious freedom comes a humongous obligation, which is to remember each and every person who sacrificed his or her life in defending the State of Israel so that it can exist and will continue to exist and the Jewish-Israeli people can continue to live free in their homeland.

Those who are not willing to fight and defend their freedom do not deserve to have freedom.

If the outcome was different and there was no Israel, life for all Jews would have different. Without the State of Israel life would be different for every Jews living in the Diaspora whether on the American north or south continent, Europe, Australia, South Africa or even China.

There is a symbiotic relation between Israel and world Jewry. Because of the strength of the Israeli military, the IDF, Jews can walk anywhere in the world with their heads high. When trouble emerges, Israel will be there to take in any Jew and give him refuge. The Land of Israel is the sanctuary for all Jews.

Israel is the oxygen of the Jewish people; it is the life insurance policy for every Jew.

Remember the fallen; remember all those who died in defense of the State of Israel so the living can keep marching on!
