When Bill Clinton ran against incumbent President George HW Bush (Bush 41) in 1992, Clinton's mastermind campaign strategist, James Carville coined one of the most successful campaign phrases ever:
"IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID"
Carville was right. And with this one slogan, Clinton roared to power. No matter how the Republicans tried to knock the Democrats off-message, they wouldn't budge.
In the election of 2008 that swept Obama and his Democrats to massive power, the slogans included "Hope & Change" and "NOT 4 more years of Bush".
The Hope and Change mantra did very well for Obama, since it meant nothing delivered by a nothing politician, to an audience buying smoke and mirrors. But, it was MOSTLY the anti-Bush mantra of "NOT FOUR MORE YEARS OF BUSH" that carried the 2008 election.
Out of sheer embarrassment, Obama and his Democrat partners-in-crime can't possibly go into the forthcoming November elections peddling their Hope and Change message based upon the dismal failure that Obama's first 18 months in office has turned out to be.
So, here we go again with attacks on Bush. But, surprise - surprise, not only are the anti-Bush attacks old and stale, they are in fact making people feel nostalgic for George W Bush, whose Presidency is all of a sudden seeming to have been not so bad.
SO WHAT TO DO - WHAT TO DO FOR THE DEMOCRATS?
Since the Democrats have NOTHING they can point to as a success for their first year and a half in the White House, and 4 years leading the House and the Senate, all they can do is campaign against Bush.
But, since that seems to be a dead-end, their ONLY other tactic is pegging the Republicans as:
1 - THE PARTY OF NO.
2 - THE PARTY WITHOUT IDEAS.
3 - AND THE PARTY OF RED NECK RACISTS (TEA PARTIERS).
In response to 1 - As Republican Minority House Leader John Boehner so eloquently put it: "We are NOT the Party of no. WE ARE HE PARTY OF HELL NO" referring to the absolute NEED to say NO to Democrat policies that are destroying America.
It seems to me that saying NO to Obama, Reid and Pelosi's follies is just what the majority of the people really want.
In response to 2 - As for the Republicans not having any ideas. That's not even close to being true. They have many ideas that are condensed into just a few, such as:
Less Government.
Lower Taxes For Everyone.
More Individual Freedoms.
Less Bureaucracy.
No Cap & Trade.
Scrap Obama Care.
No Card Check.
No Fairness Doctrine.
More Government Accountability.
AND . . . SEAL THE BORDER.
Those are GREAT ideas MOST Americans agree with.
In response to 3 - When a person, group or political Party cannot defend their own position, or find an argument that makes sense against the position of their antagonists, they resort to demagoguery. And that's what these charges of Right Wing Racism are all about. Nothing more. Nothing less.
But, going back to Carville's FAMOUS "It's The Economy Stupid" strategy, the VERY BEST the Republicans can do is campaign on a platform of:
"IT'S OBAMA STUPID"
The WORST thing the Republicans can do is start defending against spurious charges from the Democrats. They don't have to.
On July 23, 2009, six months into Obama's Presidency, I wrote an Editorial (I Told You So - Yes I did) that predicted much of what is currently happening (see archives) today.
HERE ARE TWO EXCERPTS FROM THAT EDITORIAL:
"MORE LIKELY THAN NOT, the Democrats will make Obama THEIR OWN LAME DUCK PRESIDENT."
"I don't believe the Democrats have nearly as much love for their country as they do for their own political fortunes. And with Obama, their fortunes are rapidly becoming toast."
- END QUOTES -
Just as Obama and his cadre of Democrats laid waste to the Democrats in 2008 by demagoguing George W Bush who wasn't even in the race, the Republicans can wipe the floor with the Democrats not by demagoguing Obama, but simply by shining a BRIGHT light on what Obama and his pals (Reid and Pelosi) have done to America in less than two years.
And that's all the Republicans have to do to win back America.
IT'S OBAMA STUPID - Nothing MORE - Nothing LESS.
There is no Audio Editorial associated with this Article. But, within a week or so I will once again begin "broadcasting" Audio Editorials.
Thank you to all the many readers of galganov.com who've wished Anne and myself a Happy Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah).
For those of you who do not know, at sundown September 8th, Jews worldwide will be celebrating 5771 years in existence, where during all of those years Jews have had an indomitable presence in the Middle East.
And "they" say Israel has no right to exist.
Best Regards - "Shanah Tovah" (Happy New Year) . . . Howard Galganov.
