Yesterday Palestinian Media Watch exposed that the Palestinian news agency Ma'an mislead its English-language readers by changing a statement of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. The actual statement promoted violence by Islamic forces in order to achieve Islamic dominance:
The Islamic nation "is capable of supplying an abundance of new blood... [for] restoring the glory of Islam and the flag of Allah's oneness."
[Ma'an Arabic, May 3, 2011] Ma'an's English version deleted the call for Islamic domination and replaced it with a call for "peace" that did not exist in the original:
"We tell the Israeli and the American occupiers that we have leaders who have changed history with their Jihad and their steadfastness. We are ready to sacrifice our lives to bring back peace."
[Ma'an English, May 3, 2011]
The Jerusalem Post reported today that after PMW exposed the deceptive text, Ma'an removed it from its website. Ma'an then corrected the translation, put the statement back on the website, and informed the readers of the "translation error" as follows:
"This version CORRECTS a translation error in paragraph seven and adds new information."
The new and corrected Ma'an version is similar to PMW's translation:
"It [the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades' statement] added that "we tell the American and Israeli occupier that the nation which produced leaders who changed history with its Jihad and patience is a nation capable of invigorating the resistance, which extends across the nation and is capable of restoring the glory of Islam and its flag of unity, God willing."
[Ma'an English, May 4, 2011]
PMW is pleased that Ma'an corrected its translation following PMW's exposure of the misleading translation.
Comment: Please know that Ma'an and other Arab media sources that deliver "news" in English routinely lie and intentionally misrepresent the facts and truth. What they write or say in English is meant to appease the English only speakers-for the truth you must go directly to the Arab source. If you rely upon the likes of Ma'an for your news than be advised you are often not securing the truth-always check the story against the Arabic explanation of the same story-do your home work!
