Welcome to Cal MSA

Recent Proposal to Ban the UCI MSU

Berkeley, California, Alameda County- July 28, 2010- We, the Muslim Student Association of UC Berkeley, are greatly disappointed by the recent proposal to ban the Muslim Student Union at UC Irvine for one year. This decision is rash and a form of collective punishment against all Muslim students at UC Irvine. This type of marginalization and unfair targeting of Muslim students serves to further alienate Muslims from the rest of their campus community. It is shocking that the UC Irvine administration has chosen to side against the Muslim students in their exercise of free speech. This decision undermines the most basic tenets America stands for and it also gravely impedes the MSU’s ability to represent the needs of Muslim students and to educate others about Islam. The MSU ensures the wellbeing of UC Irvine’s Muslim students, especially in the post 9/11 era where Muslims face constant harassment and humiliation. The MSU facilitates several aspects of daily life that a Muslim student needs to properly observe his or her faith including: organization of Friday congregational prayers, inviting guest speakers to foster spiritual development, hosting gatherings for breaking the fast during Ramadan, and a plethora of charitable activities throughout the school year. Banning the MSU would set a dangerous precedent, one that drives away Muslim and other minority students from considering UC Irvine as their institution of higher education.

A ban of the MSU disenfranchises the Muslim student body at UC Irvine, and deprives the campus of one of its most diverse and dynamic communities. Although we strongly disagree with the harsh and unjust legal charges against the student protesters, our main concern is the effects a ban of the MSU will have on the University’s Muslim population. It is in these critical years where a student develops intellectually. Education occurs in an environment and when that environment is hostile and unaccommodating a student’s academic maturation suffers. The MSU advocates for Muslims on campus, providing valuable insight to peers and administrators about Islam in order to foster a healthy campus climate that meets the needs of all students . It promotes not only tolerance, but cooperation and dialogue toward solving issues. Our code of conduct reflects the spirit of our University’s commitment to free speech as a means of furthering public discourse and developing vibrant minds that can balance conflicting ideas rather than stifle the voices of their critics. Silencing this voice is antithetical to the open-mindedness the University of California prides itself for.

Rather than silencing one group, we encourage the University to critically examine its own role in promoting Ambassador Oren’s February 8 speech. A number of steps can be taken before protesting a major public figure becomes necessary. It is crucial to discuss a more proactive strategy to create an educational atmosphere that promotes fair dialogue and respects diverse ideas. We encourage our administration at UC Berkeley to engage the administration at UCI on why banning the entire Muslim Student Union is unjustifiable. We advise the administration at UCI to navigate this situation wisely. A hasty decision that ignores the needs of a minority student population can forever damage the integrity of an institution, alienate both current and prospective Muslim students, and dissolve the University of California’s reputation for tolerance. As part of the nation’s leading public university system we hope the administration at UCI will act prudently and reconsider their decision.
