The Italian Chamber of Deputies has presented its Final Report on Anti-Semitism

Fiamma Nirenstein

On October 17th 2011, the Committee for the Inquiry into Anti-Semitism, chaired by MP Fiamma Nirenstein, has presented its Final Report to the public in the prestigious hall of the Presidency of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, called "Sala della Lupa". The Report was unanimously approved by all members of the Committee, formed by 30 MPs from the Constitutional Affairs and Foreign Affairs Committees. The hearings and the initiatives that have accompanied the Committee works have been lasting for the last two years. The conference was attended by Antonio Leone, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies; MP Fiamma Nirenstein, Chairperson of the Inquiry Committee; Monsignor Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization; MPs Margherita Boniver and Paolo Corsini, members of the Committee; Claudia De Benedetti, Vice-President of the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities; Leone Paserman, President of the Museum of the Shoah Foundation; Umberto Silva, psychoanalyst and columnist; Charles Small, Director of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy USA; Ugo Volli, semiologist at the University of Turin and Gert Weisskirchen, Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA).

The presentation has been attended by many MPs, representatives of the institutions, the Church and the civil society, intellectuals and by the Deputy Premier Gianni Letta.

“We have been attempting to understand the new aspects of this phenomenon, which is as aggressive and genocidal as it always was, but it is presently hiding itself by assuming new forms”, explained MP Fiamma Nirenstein. The work of the Inquiry has brought up alarming data: 44% of the Italians declare not to feel any sympathy toward the Jews; there is an exponential proliferation of antisemitic websites and social networks; the level of hatred against the State of Israel passes the limits of legitimate criticism and aims to the destruction of the Jews.

As already mentioned, the Report is the result of the work and cooperation between MPs belonging to all political parties, and has therefore been described as a best practice from a parliamentary and institutional point of view.

The conference can be viewed on the Chamber of Deputies web TV channel (http://webtv.camera.it/portal/portal/default/Archivio?IdEvento=4557&IdIntervento=2461).
