Al Qaeda plot against Suez Canal foiled by 26 arrests

wenty-five Egyptians and one Palestinian suspects detained in Egypt have confessed to planning attacks on Suez Canal shipping and oil pipelines on behalf of al Qaeda. Tuesday, July 7, DEBKAfile's counter-terror sources disclosed that a large group of 15-20 al Qaeda terrorists, trained in Pakistan and Algeria to hijack and blow up airliners, deployed secretly in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey and Egypt for multiple attacks in the week of the G8 summit in l'Aqila or thereabouts. Our military sources report that this week an Israeli nuclear-capable Dolphin submarine escorted by a missile vessel transited the Suez Canal on the way back to its Mediterranean base from a Red Sea drill that took place off Eilat last month. Marine transport insurance sources remarked that if al Qaeda terrorists had succeeded in its purpose of sinking ships and blocking the canal, through which one-tenth of global seaborne traffic passes, oil prices, insurance fees and cargo rates would have hit the roof.

The leader of the al Qaeda cell was an Egyptian, Mohammed Fahim Hussein. The Egyptian interior ministry reported Friday, July 10, that the equipment seized in their homes showed they were able to make their own remote-controlled bombs.

Comment: We have entered the next round of terrorism. Soft targets have been identified and training has not only begun, in many instances it has been completed. As Egypt ramps up its "support" for the Obama ME plan we shall see more and more of these plots unfold. Thanks to the courageous work of several different nations many of the events have been exposed and thwarted. Forthe USA to reduce the notion of international terror threat and then reduce its funding is a mistake made by previous administrations. To change terrorism laws and policies like phone taps, computer watch is inviting attacks. Until such time that the Western leadership has a realistic understanding our terrorism and what is its motivation, until we accept an ideological war is at hand, we shall continue to make policy and strategy mistakes resulting in many tragedies. Our enemies do not have the same mind set as we in the West and thus are moving rapidly forward with their plans.
