Obama wants to end the legacy

Ted Belman

Obama’s demand for a settlement freeze is not intended to advance the peace process but is intended to drive a wedge through, not only the Jewish community in both Israel and the US but also through the close relationship between Congress and the Senate representing the American people and Israel. These relationships are made of sterner stuff. In the early part of this week PM Netanyahu gave a loud “No” to Obama’s demands that Israel stop construction in Jerusalem (East). But to a similar demand from France this week, he went further.

“A solution to the settlements can only be reached through a comprehensive and final peace agreement,”

So said foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor to AFP. This suggests no freeze at all. It is a position I totally agree with. The best and fastest way for the Arabs to get the construction to stop is to compromise with Israel and make a deal. This they have no intention of doing. That’s why the demand for a freeze. It is for this reason, that Israel should continue with construction and even increase it to keep the pressure on the Arabs to compromise or to put more facts on the ground.

Both the US and Israel understand that,

1. Saudi Arabia won’t change her “Peace Plan”
2. this plan did not offer “end of conflict” but only normalization”.
3. the Arabs will not recognize Israel, will not end the conflict and will not compromise their demands.

Thus Netanyhu’s conditions for an agreement can not and will not be met.

Nevertheless, Obama continues to pressure Israel for a freeze. If Netanyahu were to agree to a freeze it would not advance the peace process one iota and Obama knows this. So why is he making these demands. I have suggested it is to obtain brownie points with the Arabs and it is an end in itself. But there is one more reason. Obama wants to destroy the Israel Lobby as defined by Measheimer and Walt. He want’s to sever the relationship that has existed between the American people and Israel. Good luck to that.

Netanyahu continues to resist the pressure while at the same appearing reasonable.

Although we are told that support among Americans for Israel is dropping and this may be so, but we have just began to fight.

Adding to Israel’s resistance is the recent press release by the Conference Board of Presidents. Also CUFI had a big conference in Washington this week and its message to Congress is don’t pressure Israel. With support for Obama eroding, his clout gets weaker and weaker.

Just prior to presenting his credentials to the White House this week, Ambassador Oren wrote the following entry in the White House Guest Book:

“As the grandson of Jewish immigrants who found shelter from oppression in this promising land; as the son of a World War II veteran who fought for freedom from Normandy to the Rhine; and as a scholar who studied and taught at some of America’s premier institutions, I am honored to represent my ancestral homeland, the State of Israel, to the country of my birth.”

“For more than two hundred years, since the Founding Fathers considered making Moses and the Exodus the Great Seal of the Republic, the revival of the Jewish state has been a cherished American dream. John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, and, of course, Harry Truman-all were champions of Jewish statehood in the Land of Israel.”

“This legacy is now yours, Mr. President, and I pledge my paramount efforts to join you in upholding the historic United States-Israel alliance.”

Thus Israel realizes that Obama is attempting to abandon this legacy. Americans will understand it too.
