Speaking at PM's entrepreneurship and innovation prize ceremony, prime minister says: We are in intensive contacts with the US to move the process forward.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke at the ceremony for his Prime Minister's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Prize in Haifa on Thursday. Netanyahu said that following his talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, that "we are in intense contacts to advance the understandings to propel the political process forward."

The prime minister reiterated that the American settlement freeze deal would "safeguarding the interests [of the country], chiefly security." He added, "If I receive such an offer, I will bring it to the cabinet for approval and I have no doubt that members of the government will accept it." Earlier on Thursday, President Shimon Peres expressed hope that, in the next few days, the details of the agreement to continue the building freeze will be finalized and direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians will resume.

The president's comments came after a US official said the Obama administration is drafting written diplomatic and security assurances to Israel to persuade Netanyahu's government to renew a freeze on West Bank settlement activity.

"It was always envisioned that there would be a letter detailing our understandings," the official said on Wednesday. "We are nailing down the specifics."

Netanyahu was hopeful on Wednesday night that negotiations with the US over a written incentives package in exchange for a 90-day settlement freeze will soon be completed.

The US document would reflect the understandings reached between Netanyahu and Clinton at their meeting last Thursday in New York, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

“If the American document is designed according to these principles, it will be an excellent agreement for the State of Israel,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Comments at the paper:
Notice that only a week has passed since Bibi met with Hillary and the "ünderstandings and agreements" are at odds. How can Bibi run back to Israel without a final version ? What could happen after 5 years when another administration comes ? Smacks of desperation and incompetance.

Leaving out a freeze on building in East Jerusalem will not get the Palestinians back to the table. This stalemate will be the death of the 2 state solution. The fallback, a one state solution with equal rights for all inhabitants which in a decade from now will be a majority Arab population. Getting there will be a painful journey for all Inhabitants of the region.

I don't know why everyone is complaining so much. The Pals will never agree to this so the places and letters of assurances will be freebies. meanwhile, Bibi can say he gave them a chance. 90 Days is nothing in the middle East, we gave the 10 months and it took Mazan 9 months to agree to sit down and talk. 90 days will go by quick. What happens after that would be the appropiate question.

This is a master-play by Bibi. He gets all the concessions, in writing, knowing that Mazen will refuse. Michael

There's a game children (and the childish) play. The purpose is to make your opponent turn away to avert some impending injury, while you maintain a foolish course directly into the danger. The winner may be injured, but he showed courage to the end; the black eye or wound is his badge of honor. When children play, it is called 'Chicken'. When adults play, it is called 'Drunk & Disorderly Conduct'. When Politicians play, it is called 'Foreign Policy'.
