We have known about the rape of boys in Afghanistan (north, south, east) for a long time – “Afghanistan must do more to end an age-old practice of young boys being kept as sex slaves by wealthy and powerful patrons,” claimed the U.N. special representative for children and armed conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy. She went on to note that the practice, called “bacha bazi” — literally “boy play” – is the secret everyone knows with comments that it’s been around for 1000 years so why do we want to raise it now….. For years, I’ve repeatedly written about the myth of “Islamic modesty.” It’s bunk, but we somehow assign an exoticism and strange respect for devout Muslims who actually engage in some of the worst sexual, immodest practices, including using young boys as sex slaves all over the Islamic world (something I’ve also written about). And our hand-picked Prime Minister, Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai, actually allows this pimping and human trafficking of poor, young boys to devout Muslims to gang rape them. And that’s after they make the boys wear women’s clothing and dance for them. It’s truly disgusting. If you saw the movie or read the book, “The Kite Runner” (read my review), you are probably familiar with the practice.

For centuries, Afghan men have taken boys, roughly 9 to 15 years old, as lovers. Some research suggests that half the Pashtun tribal members in Kandahar and other southern towns are bacha baz, the term for an older man with a boy lover. Literally it means “boy player.” The men like to boast about it.

“Having a boy has become a custom for us,” Enayatullah, a 42-year-old in Baghlan province, told a Reuters reporter. “Whoever wants to show off should have a boy.”
