Everyone knows the game of “Good Cop” and “Bad Cop.” The meaning of the game is that there is no good cop or bad cops. Just two cops with the same agenda and different poses.
Europe is already, for the most part, anti-Israel, so it’s a natural for playing the heavy. While Obama makes some supportive noises toward Israel and then warns the Jewish State that if it doesn’t do as it’s told, Europe will have its way.
The United States was behind the summoning of Israeli
ambassadors by several European nations, Israeli sources with close ties
to US administration officials said Monday.
“The European move is essentially an American move,” one official said. “The Brits asked the Americans how to act.”Now think about the Palestinian Authority UN bid in that same light. The United States made a show of voting against, but what it did tell European governments behind the scene?
Obama’s gambit is clever enough because it both isolates Israel and makes it more dependent on him, while allowing him to position himself as a strong supporter of Israel.
Hamas, backed by the new government he helped install in Egypt, shells Israel. Israel fights back. Obama makes a supportive statement and then pressures Israel to accept ceasefire terms favorable to Hamas.
Abbas mounts a UN bid. Rice tells American allies to vote for it, while voting against it, and then resumes with business as usual. Israel responds with added construction and Obama gives Europe the go-ahead to bash Israel while making only a limited condemnation. (The Muslim Brotherhood’s coup in Egypt have yet to receive a similar condemnation.)
But there is no good cop/bad cop. Obama and the EU are all equally anti-Israel.
