Comment: An Arab media's perception
Damascus, (PIC)-- Dr. Mousa Abu Marzouk, the deputy head of the political bureau of Hamas stated on Thursday that the autumn conference was never meant to put the Palestinian issue on a settlement track, , but rather aimed at extricating the Bush administration from the mess they got themselves into in Iraq particularly and an attempt to open new horizons with respect to the Iranian nuclear file.
In an exclusive interview with the PIC in the Syrian capital Damascus, Abu Marzouk pointed out that the said conference "has no defined features in respect of its agenda, date it will be convened and parties that will attend," and considered that for Abbas to attend this conference is to bet on an illusion that will not lead at the end except to a dark tunnel that is similar to Oslo if not much worse.
He urged Abbas to rethink his stands and called on him to heed Palestinian and Arab calls to return to the Palestinian national dialogue to put the Palestinian house in order on the basis on national interests.
The Hamas senior political leader also pointed out that the USA administration, which has called for the conference, was itself going through internal and external political crises and knows very well that the Israeli occupation government of [Israeli premier] Ehud Olmert was weaker than to make important decisions of the magnitude of agreeing to a political settlement with the Palestinians to meet even the lowest demands of the Palestinians.
He also noted that even the US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, who was making frantic efforts to get parties to attend the conference, herself, and according to her statements, has no specific vision as to the shape, nature or feasibility of the conference.
"She (Rice) is trying, through her visits to Zionist leaders in occupied Jerusalem and PA president in Ramallah, to formulate a general document, on which Olmert and Abbas agree in order for the conference to adopt. The document has no timetable for implementing the agreements, and thus such document and whatever the conference produces will be blown away in the winds of the US [presidential] elections and the fading of the Olmert government," he said.
He criticized Abbas's meetings with the Israelis and eagerly dashing towards a political settlement that suits the US, adding that if this option fails and Abbas does not get from the autumn conference what he hopes to get the PA will be left in a very weak position and this, in turn, will weaken the Palestinian position in general.
With regard to the Palestinian internal front, Abu Marzouk said tha Abbas was still betting on a total collapse in the Gaza Strip, that’s why the PA in Ramallah, with the help of US and Israel, tightened the siege imposed on the Strip in all aspects of life.
But he warned that any possible collapse in the Gaza Strip would lead to a Palestinian rift that will be difficult to heal and the PA in Ramalah would be responsible.
He stated that Hamas will make every effort to reform all aspects in the Palestinian arena in accordance with the principles and constants of our people, hoping to achieve this by good performance in the Gaza Strip and trying to unite the Palestinian people on a political program that preserves their rights.
He also said that preparations for the planned Palestinian national conference in Damascus were underway, adding that Palestinian resistance factions, popular organizations, professional unions, independent and public personalities from inside and outside of Palestine were invited for the conference.
A large number of respected Arab personalities were also invited for the meeting, which is slated for 4th November, he added.
"We want to send a message out of this conference: the Palestinian people insist on unity and national constants, reject all solutions that squander Palestinian national rights exploiting the state of division of Palestinians and support the restructuring of the PLO on healthy grounds that guarantee the participation all Palestinian factions and guarantee protecting our National project," he concluded
