Arabs Defy the United Nations for Fifty-Nine Years

Arlene Bridges-Samuels

If the Arabs had conformed to the 1947 United Nations Resolution 181, we would not be recognizing the anniversary of the Six Day War Instead, forty years ago, Arab armies and weaponry amassed on the borders of Israel ready to strike with deadly force in an attempt to once again annihilate the tiny Jewish state. While the United Nations itself declared Israel a modern state on November 29,1947 giving both Jews and Arabs a state, the Arabs rebelled against the United Nations, attacking the Jews the day after Israel’s May 14, 1948 Declaration of Statehood.

In essence, the Arabs have defied the United Nations for fifty-nine years. The Arabs have NEVER accepted UN Resolution 181 recognizing the Palestinian Arab AND Jewish rights to a state. And twenty years after the UN Declaration, Arabs instigated the Six Day War. Read these sample quotes by Iraq and Egypt’s leaders in the 1967 lead-up to war: “ The existence of Israel itself is an aggression…what happened in 1948 was an aggression-an aggression against the Palestinian people…” Egyptian President Gamel Abdel Nasser. “The existence of Israel is an error that must be rectified. This is our opportunity to wipe out the ignominy which has been with us since 1948. Our goal is clear-to wipe Israel off the map.” Iraqi President Aref . (Quotes gleaned from www.SixDayWar.co.uk). Let’s reflect on what could have been.

Had the Palestinians and their Arab brethren adhered to UN Resolution 181’s detailed plan accepting the 1947 two state solution, the Palestinians would now be sharing the largesse of Israel’s thriving economy. Rather than refugee towns, Gazan Palestinians (Lebanese Palestinian towns might be non-existent) would live in decent apartments and single-family homes. Unemployment would be lower. Research and productivity would be higher. Palestinian children would thrive on their Arabic alphabet rather than their hate-filled anti-Jewish music videos. Honor killings against women would be either greatly reduced or non-existent. Arab Christians wouldn’t face persecution. Arab journalists would not fear for their lives when speaking against their government. The billions given to the Palestinians would have built hospitals, clinics, and modern schools instead of purchasing weaponry to commit genocide against the Jews.

The Jews complied. The Arabs rebelled, victims of their own self-destruction.

Had Palestinian and other Arabs accepted UN Resolution 181 in 1947 and later, the ill-fated 1993 Oslo Accords, current realities would be far different. Innocent Israelis would be alive. Innocent Palestinians would be alive. Resolution 181 in part “Calls upon the inhabitants of Palestine to take such steps as may be necessary on their part to put this plan into effect.”
The Jews complied. The Arabs rebelled.

The UN General Assembly “adopted resolution 181 (II), partitioning Palestine into two States, one Arab and one Jewish, with an economic union between them.” Jerusalem was slated to be under a special international regime. Res. 181 outlined specific steps leading to independence for both Jews and Arabs. Some of the steps included drafting a democratic constitution, renouncing violence or force “against the territorial integrity of political independence of any State, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations” and equality for all in “civil, political, economic and religious matters and the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion, language, speech and publication, education, assembly and association.” Freedom of movement was also factored in saying “preserving freedom of transit and visit for all residents or citizens of both States and of the City of Jerusalem, subject to security considerations; provided that each state and the City shall control residence within its borders.”

Once again, the Jewish people complied, the Arabs rebelled.

Each state was to have membership in the United Nations. Israel has membership. The Palestinian Arabs don’t. Here’s why: Resolution 181 states, “When the independence of either the Arab or the Jewish State as envisaged in this plan has become effective and the declaration and undertaking, as envisaged in this plan, have been signed by either of them, sympathetic consideration should be given to its application for admission to membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations.” (To read all of UN Resolution 181, go to Resolution 181 (II) of 1947).

The Israelis complied. The Arabs rebelled.

The Arabs in their rebellion have done two things extremely well. They have developed an exceptional propaganda machine, aided by those who refuse to look at Resolution 181’s 1947 plan and subsequent Arab-instigated conflict and rebellion. The propaganda has been so effective that the United Nations in general fawns over the Palestinians’ failures and rebellion and constantly places the blame at Israel’s doorstep. IF the Palestinian Arabs had chosen to conform instead of rebel, they might today enjoy the same vibrancy Israel enjoys. They have also elevated victimization to levels far beyond those even in Darfur or any other place where populations are literally starving while Palestinians buy weapons instead of building more hospitals for their people. The UN is still more concerned about Palestinians than Africans and other truly oppressed peoples. For all of the strife to end, only one thing is necessary. The Arabs must conform to UN Resolution 181 crafted and passed in 1947.

Yet, even though Arabs still rebel fifty-nine years later, there is another reality. Despite Arab-instigated violence, United Nations anti-Semitism, media bias, terrorism, and 24/7 hatred for fifty-nine years, the Israelis endure against all odds. Their economy is vibrant. Their research blesses all of humankind. We all enjoy their inventions. With one hand, Israelis have built a little giant of a nation while forced to hold an Uzi in the other hand to defend themselves.

They flourish despite everything. Now THAT’s something to celebrate.
