Hamas smuggled no less than $70 million via Rafah tunnels linking Egypt with the Gaza Strip two weeks ago, Palestinian sources revealed. Two Hamas leaders sneaked $35m. in suitcases in September through a hole in the wall demarcating the borders between Gaza and Egypt, known as the Philadelphia route.
Another $35m. was smuggled by two Hamas parliamentarians, who were among 86 other operatives that Egypt allowed to return to Gaza via the Rafah terminal after being stranded for months on the Egyptian side of the border, the sources added. The smuggling of money by Hamas officials via the Rafah tunnels is not new, Minister of Pensioner Affairs, Ashraf ‘Ajrami told The Media Line. “From time to time, [Hamas officials] travel to collect cash form neighboring countries, such as Iran and bring them back to Gaza mostly via the tunnels.” The influx of cash into the costal enclave has become a Hamas method to overcome the financial crisis, which emerged due to the pressures of international sanctions on Gaza. Israel and Western powers have tried to block funds from reaching Hamas through the Palestinian and international banking system as part of a policy to shore up Palestinian leader Mahmoud ‘Abbas and isolate the Islamist group.
