Binyamin Netanyahu is warning against the division of Jerusalem. During the International Congress of Mayors taking place in Jerusalem this week, the head of the opposition said that the division of Jerusalem would not mark the end of the conflict but indeed, the "start of a war".
China has canceled its participation in the summit in which it was scheduled to meet with the United States, Britain, France, Russia and Germany to discuss how to deal with the Iranian threat. This cancellation follows the American decision to award the Medal of the American Congress to the Dalai Lama.
Germany has called on the European Union to adopt a new plan of action to promote the Middle East peace process. The participants in this program would commit themselves mainly to support the Palestinian economy, the security forces and public institutions. The German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, called on his European colleagues to act to strengthen the public sector, to train the Palestinian security forces and to support the PA universities and students.
The President of the PA, Mahmoud Abbas, has announced that he has requested the assistance of the United States to freeze the construction of new Jewish settlements and the security fence. Abbas made these remarks at a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after the end of their meeting.
The International Atomic Energy Agency called on all countries with information on possible nuclear facilities in Syria to report it.
Following the speech by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the Knesset during which he hinted that he might give up Israeli sovereignty over some Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, the Likud party called on Shas and Israel Beitenu ''to take its head out of the sand'' and to immediately leave the coalition.
