Jumblatt claims US will back simple-majority election

Arab perspective

BEIRUT: Head of the Democratic Gathering parliamentary bloc Walid Jumblatt said on Thursday he still endorsed the scenario of having the next president chosen by simple majority and warned against the election of a pro-Syrian president. We will elect a president with a simple majority if we fail to reach an agreement with the opposition," Jumblatt told Al-Arabiya television during the show "Bil Arabi" hosted by Giselle Khoury.

"The US will endorse this president," he added.

Jumblatt added that the March 14 Forces should have elected a president during the first session on October 23.

The session to elect a president on October 23 was postponed for lack of constitutional quorum. Observers say the session is likely to be again postponed because feuding parties have still not reached a consensus over the presidency.

Lebanese lawmakers are expected to report to the Parliament on Monday for the next attempt to elect a president.

"We abstained from doing so out of respect for the Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir," he said.

Sfeir has been calling for an intra-Christian agreement in particular and an intra-Lebanese consensus in general over the presidential election.
