No One Is Above Criticism: King Abdullah

From Arab News:

RIYADH, 16 March 2008 — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has declared that no one in the country was above criticism, including himself.

“God is my witness that I have not hesitated to criticize myself harshly because of a strong feeling of my responsibility before the Lord,” King Abdullah said in his address to the Shoura Council yesterday.

He said that he derived his power from God’s mercy which leads him to deep soul-searching. The king referred to himself as a “self-critic,” adding that he was capable, with the support of God, of promoting righteousness and preventing wickedness.

“Let us all remember that we are responsible before God and then our people and nation,” he said. Addressing 150 Shoura members as well as princes, ministers, government officials, and foreign diplomats at the opening of the fourth annual session of the current Shoura Council, the king called upon all citizens to fear God and ensure that there was no place for injustice in society.

“Let there not be between us an oppressor and an oppressed, a powerful or a weak. We are all loving brothers in one country who are true to its faith and are willing to give their lives for it,” he said.

In a speech referred to by the king as one “from the heart to the heart,” he said Saudi Arabia had always respected responsible freedom. “Freedom comes from thinking and constructive criticism, which is a responsibility, and cannot be taken for granted,” he said. “We preserve our freedom and define its parameters. And we tell the world: These are our principles and our ethics which are derived from our religion,” he added.

The king stressed that responsible freedom was the legitimate right of every peace-loving person who cherished his country along with its spiritual and structural basis.

King Abdullah stressed the importance of national unity and said that citizens should not fall prey to pre-Islamic prejudices, calling on his countrymen not to follow regional or tribal bias. The king said boldly that Saudi Arabia was here to stay, adding that it was capable of weathering all challenges it might face.

Determination and Change

“Let everyone know that the period of unrest which was ended by the founder King Abdul Aziz is gone and will never return,” the king said. “God willing, what will be left is a memory which further cements the principles of righteousness and unity for this country, a unity which helps turn hardships into determination and change.”

The political stability of the nation, the king said, was a necessity for the preservation of its unity, adding that on that basis and to achieve development and prosperity, the Allegiance Council was established last year. In addition, he said, judicial reforms have been introduced and SR7 billion has been allocated to upgrade judicial facilities.

Another important necessity for the development of the country, the king said, was economic stability. New projects worth SR165 billion have been approved in the new fiscal budget in order to achieve balanced development all over the Kingdom, he pointed out. “These new projects, God willing, will contribute to greatly increased economic development and the creation of more job opportunities,” he said.

King Abdullah pointed out that education was the pillar of any scientific achievement and genuine development of a nation. On that basis, he hoped the project to develop general education would lead to improving the skills of Saudi students in science and technology.

The king said that with the construction of new universities, higher education was now available in all regions of the Kingdom.

He said the Kingdom had given importance to the sectors of environment and energy when it announced a donation of $300 million to a research fund that aims at environmental protection. The Kingdom’s donation was announced at the OPEC summit in Riyadh last November. The king said the government was keen to put the welfare and interests of its citizens first when it came to the public good. “On that basis, a number of commissions, government departments and private institutions have been set up to care for the affairs of citizens,” he said. They include the National Commission to Fight Corruption, the Public Housing Authority and the Consumer Protection Association. He added: “The government, God willing, intends to achieve growth by improving the living conditions of citizens and the quality of their lives.”

King Abdullah lauded the efforts of the Saudi security forces that have foiled — and continue to foil — the plots of terrorist groups whose aim is to destabilize the country, inflict the maximum harm on citizens and destroy the country’s achievements.

Gratitude and Appreciation

“Your courageous brothers in the security forces have achieved remarkable results in dismantling terrorist cells, drying up their sources of funds, and exposing their ideology to everyone,” he said. “They (the security officers) have our gratitude and appreciation. May the Almighty have mercy on our martyrs,” he added.

Referring to the Palestinian issue, King Abdullah said Saudi Arabia would continue to provide unwavering support to the Palestinians until they had won their legitimate rights. He also reiterated the Kingdom’s support for the Arab peace proposal in order to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace settlement in the Middle East.
