SL recognizes Israel's right to exist : Envoy

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Geneva, Dayan Jayatillake told the UN Human Rights Council, Friday, that Sri Lanka fully recognised the right of Israel to exist, for legitimate self defence and to combat terrorism, according to a transcript of his speech posted on the UN website.he envoy noted that it had been the state of Israel that had caused the moderate wing of the Palestinian government to be weakened which had given more power to Hamas adding that it was possible to combat terrorism in that country while cooperating with the United Nations and the Special Procedures.

He added that Sri Lanka condemned the policy of punishment imposed on the Palestinians.

Ambassador Jayatillake drew parallels to the situation in Palestine to that in Sri Lanka and said Sri Lanka had been commended for bringing supplies to the civilians in the areas where it was engaged in combat. “From their experience, they knew that it was possible to combat terrorism without blocking a whole area and making hundreds of people suffer,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s policy however is to recognise the rights of Palestinians. A road was named in Palestine last year in recognition of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s concern and solidarity towards the Palestinian cause.
