A "shadowy" figure in the plot to blow up transatlantic jets with liquid bombs used a false passport to pose as a honeymooner as he flew into Britain from South Africa, a court heard.
Mohammed Yassar Gulzar was one of three key players in a plan to bring terror to the skies in a manner the world "was unlikely ever to forget", the jury was told. The 26-year-old arrived at Heathrow using a false name and passport just two days before the purchase of a bomb factory and at a time when the "foot soldiers" of the group were buying bomb-making ingredients, it is alleged.
Having purchased a ticket a day before his journey, he travelled with a woman he had recently married and the pair stopped off for two nights in Mauritius on their way to Britain.
But after arriving at Heathrow on July 18, 2006, Gulzar took up residence in an unfurnished house in Barking, East London, and his wife, who had no return ticket, later flew to Belgium.
Gulzar - who was a British citizen but had travelled on a South African passport bearing the name Altaf Ravat - was then seen meeting up with Assad Sarwar and Abdulla Ahmed Ali, alleged to be the other two key members in the plot, said Peter Wright QC, prosecuting.
The three men, along with five others, are accused of plotting to blow up at least seven planes flying from Heathrow to cities in the U.S. and Canada by detonating bombs made from soft drink bottles between August and October 2006.
If they had been successful, almost 2,000 passengers and crew would have been killed with countless more casualties if the airliners had come down over land.
