Mayor Ron Nachman of the central Samaria city of Ariel, has invited ex-British Prime Minister and current Quartet Middle East envoy Tony Blair, as well as leaders of the Palestinian Authority, to Ariel in order to advance "regional economic cooperation." Mayor Nachman sent a letter to Blair as a follow-up to the latter's visit in Israel last month, in which he was the main speaker at an event in Beit Yehoshua. Blair visited Israel and the Palestinian Authority in the framework of his role as Quartet coordinator of activities designed to help the PA build state institutions and develop economically. The Quartet consists of the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations.
Blair had planned to visit Gaza, but this was called off following security threats to his life. Blair's wife's half-sister was one of the participants in the pro-Hamas challenge to Israel's sovereignty in two large boats off the Gaza coast last week.
Nachman wrote to Blair, "I was happy to hear your words at the conference in Beit Yehoshua. I would like to remind you of the question I asked you there, and of your encouraging response, regarding the possibility of third-sector [philanthropic] contributions for the promotion of peace between the Israelis and Palestinians as neighbors living together in the region."
"I am honored," Nachman continued, "to invite you to visit here in our city of Ariel, as a guest of mine and of the city. I would be happy if you would be accompanied by senior functionaries of the PA from our region. This, in order to have pointed dialogue between neighbors and lay down foundations of co-existence and day-to-day cooperation, with no connection to any immediate political solution."
Nachman, a former Likud MK, has served as Mayor of Ariel since 1985. He concluded his letter to Blair by expressing his "belief that given your international stature - former Prime Minister of Britain, representative of the Quartet, and trusted by the sides in our region - your cooperation with me and with mayors of local PA towns, such as Salfit and Shechem, with the help of the third sector, can jump-start dramatic moves in the region."
