Ben Gurion's diary, 15.5.1948 They woke me up twice tonight. At one o'clock - to let me know that Truman has recognized the Jewish state. At 4:30 AM - between the two phone calls I haven't slept at all - to tell me that our people in America demand that I speak immediately on the radio.
This Government has been informed that a Jewish state has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the provisional Government thereof.
The United State recognizes the provisional government as the de facto authority of the new Jewish state. State of Israel.
