Vice premier tells conference that an Israeli strike on Iran must be the last option, Palestinians must recognize Jewish state.

A military strike on Iran must be a believable option, Vice Premier Moshe Ya’alon said in a seminar at the Institute for National Security Studies on Thursday.

Israel must be ready to stop a nuclear Iran on its own, Ya'alon said, but said that a military option "is the last one and only comes after all other options have been used."

"But it has to be a believable military option," he explained, saying Tehran must be convinced that if all measures from the UN Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) and international community are exhausted, it will be forced to make a decision with the dilemma "of a bomb or survival."

That option, he repeated, "must come after all other options have been exhausted."

Ya'alon also addressed the core of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, saying that "the heart of the problem didn't start in 1967."

"The conflict didn't begin then and it won't end - for the Arabs - with '67 borders," he added.

Palestinians, the vice premier continued, must recognize Israel as the state for the Jewish people and begin to educate their children to do so.

That, he said, will help solve the conflict.
