Era of Absurdity

Nurit Greenger

In 2008, Ari B., a unwavering, stanch pro-Israel activist, presented an idea to the Kadima party that was at that time engaged is spending millions of Shekels on then, foreign minister and prime minister in waiting, Tzipi Livni's plan to brand Israel.  The branding was so "successful" that today Israel is seen as the origin of all the evil and sins in the world.  Since then a new term was added to our vocabulary trove: delegitimization [of Israel] and this type of branding is a grim reminder of the infamous number that was tattooing on the arms of concentration camps Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust.

When missiles started flying from Gaza into the town of Sderot we, Jews, were outraged. The human mind easily gets used to the absurd. After thousands of missiles fired from Gaza have landed, and are still landing, in southern, and already not so southern, Israel, we once again heard the news of what is taking place in the south  and we see Jews running for shelter as the rockets make their noisy headway through the skies and we just do not react. We have become used to the absurd.
When Jewish families were thrown out of their homes in Gush Kati , in Gaza, we were outraged! We have see brutal evacuation' scenes from the expulsion of the Amona community and we were outraged. But again, the human mind has become used to the absurd...few other families' homes in Migron were demolished in September 2011, last week the residents of Ulpana neighborhood in Beit El were expelled, and then Migron's complete community is now threatened and in queue for expulsion and destruction on 1st August and ...the human mind is getting used to this absurd too.

And dare we speak out! And dare we object and resist!

Dare we use the word Nazi in our vocabulary when we see the Pogroms of Jews against Jews. And we hear the do-gooders yell out and say, "how can you use these words in this connotation?!" Yet, they sit back and say nothing, do nothing, they live in their absurd world.

We get used to the absurd way too fast.
Woe to us getting accustomed to the absurdity of this word "delegitimization," tattooed on our national arm.

Woe to the world not responding in fury and making the UN accountable and condemn it for Iran’s Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi vicious anti-Semitic speech before a UN forum on fighting drug addiction in Tehran. Woe to us getting accustomed to the absurdity of endless rockets fired at Israel that are weakening the morale of the citizens and is wearing their patience thin.
Woe to us getting accustomed to the absurdity of Jews demolishing other Jews' homes and synagogues and Jews destroying other Jews' life, for totally misguided political reasons!
Complacency kills!
