'Abbas In Washington for Talks with U.S. President

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud 'Abbas will meet with Jordanian King Abdallah II in Washington on Wednesday before meeting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the afternoon. 'Abbas will meet with President George W. Bush at the White House on Thursday. Prior to that meeting, 'Abbas will meet with members of Congress. The Palestinian leader arrived in Washington after visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. 'Abbas supports the Russian plan to hold an Annapolis-style peace conference in June while the Israelis are cool to the idea. Following the U.S. president's visit to Israel to participate in its 60th anniversary celebrations from May 14 to 16, Bush plans to hold a summit conference at the Egyptian resort of Sharm A-Sheikh on May 17. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will be there and 'Abbas says he will attend. Although Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has not officially announced his intentions, no one doubts he will be in Sharm A-Sheikh on May 17 if Bush wants him there.
U.S. Sends Diplomat to Run Blair's Mideast Office

The American government will try to elevate the mission of former British prime minister Tony Blair as overseer of the development of the institutions that will form the crux of the Palestinian state and boost the standing of P.A. Chairman Mahmoud 'Abbas among the Palestinian people with the addition of a U.S. diplomat as Blair's "head of mission." The Associated Press is reporting that it has obtained a memo from U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Welch assigning his deputy, Robert Danin, to that post. On May 2 Blair will host a donors' conference in London to raise additional money for the Palestinian Authority from the international community.
