Stanley Zir and Susan North
Over the last 8 years I have been chronicling the presence of a cancer in the Middle East peace process that has been slowly eating away at the lifelines needed to keep Jerusalem under Israel’s sovereignty. On Friday Obama dropped the UN Peace Bomb on Israel. Now there can be no doubt about his position on protecting the sovereignty of Israel. Who is Barak Hussein Obama, a hero standing for freedom in Egypt, and for freedom in the Islamic world? He says Americans must respect the rights of the Islamic people and that their voices must be heard.
Obama said to Bill O’Reilly, the day of the Super Bowl, when asked his advice to news outlets, “the best thing news agencies can do is to give people the facts”. So let’s take him at his word and look at his record to see if his foreign policy even resembles a freedom agenda.
When Lebanon was on the brink of being overrun by Hezbollah, Obama was silent. Did he fear that standing against Hezbollah would damage any chance he has of engaging the terrorist state of Syria in dialogue? Is this what produced his lack of outrage against Hezbollah’s dastardly acts?
In this case, his so-called freedom agenda rendered America an impotent force in standing up to two terrorist outposts (as identified by our State Department). Thus leaving Lebanon, an ally, hanging out to dry, and turning America’s ship of state, into a ship of fools listing in the water.
Over the past two years, Obama has signaled to Iran’s leadership that they have a free hand to act with impunity. America under Obama’s leadership is unwilling to do anything to oppose their act of aggression, and thus it is open season on the United States, Israel and the free world.
Why has Obama never threatened a blockade of Iran to prevent it from receiving missiles from Russia which can secure Iranian nuclear facilities as an impenetrable fortress – or prevent Iran from receiving offensive missiles to launch a nuclear attack on Israel. What did he do to stop Russia from delivering sophisticated anti-ship cruise missiles in 2010 to Syria. Missiles which can be used to attack America’s fleet in the Mediterranean. Was there a threat from Russia that they would send defensive missiles to Iran to secure their nuclear facilities, if the United States opposed the Start Treaty? This was the thinking of many on the hill.
But Obama’s “get out of jail free card” extends far beyond the shores of the Middle East. It is obvious that the tyrannies of that region do not have a monopoly on his generosity. What was his position when the people of Honduras, adhering to their own constitutional mandates, disposed Zelaya who wanted to make himself President-for-Life? Obama supported Zelaya and opposed the freely elected congress of Honduras. What was his response when Iran and Russia both showed up at Chavez’s front door last year to discuss building a nuclear reactor in Venezuela? How many golden opportunities has Obama, the leader of the free world, allowed to pass him by, when he could have set these tyrannies back on their heels?
Now, when it appears the Egyptian people have had enough of a tyrannical government that has kept a high percentage of the population in poverty, and denied them recourse to address their grievances, Obama glides in on his white horse to save the day. “You must have change, NOW,” he demanded of Mubarak in front of the world.
Obama’s actions were disgraceful. He is an opportunist; his actions undermine the credibility of our nation’s noble enterprise. Below is a true story that sheds light on his disgraceful behavior.
A few years back there were numerous attacks on people in the new York subways. It was not being addressed by the mayor. A female friend was sitting in a subway train when she was attacked by three men with box cutters. She fought them off while screaming ‘get the hell out of here.’ After the attackers left the car, a man stands up and as the doors are closing he yells, “and don’t come back.” Obama is like that man. He isn’t willing to help until the victim stands up, and only if the outcome looks guaranteed. In the case of Egypt, now that Obama has the wind at his back, he calls out to the people to stand up against their oppressors.
What was Obama’s position in 2009 when the Iranian people protested in the streets against Ahmadinejad’s rigged election? Silence!
Like Obama, Mrs. Clinton has never stood up publically to the leaders of the Islamic world with any gusto until recently when she mildly scolded Arab leaders. This was just a scolding. But she has a reputation as a scold. No doubt Obama put this endearing trait of hers to good use just prior to the State of the Union in order to present a show of strength to the American people and the Islamic world.
Yet Obama, with Mrs. Clinton’s support, is all too willing to sit down with the Moslem Brotherhood, PLO, Hamas, and Hezbollah (all four are terrorist organizations). And he is will sit down with the nations of Syria and Iran, both of whom embrace tyranny and terrorism as their protocol.
Obama seems to fashion himself the Dialogue King, a Prophet of Peace, a modern day Martin Luther King, anyone but the leader of the free world.
There is a questions we must ask Obama, in his quest to be a Gandhi. Why, as the leader of the free world, is he not standing with Israel the only nation which embraces democracy in the Middle East? Yet, he is not standing against the Palestinians who voted in terrorists as their elected officials.
Why support supporters of terrorist, yet stand with the people of Egypt against a tyrant? What is his freedom agenda? What message is he sending to Israel? What does he have in store for America?
Obama needs a Reagan beat-down, just like the one Reagan gave Carter in order to restore honor to our nation. Reagan stood up for a strong nation. He wanted partnerships, but not with tyrannies. He wanted to end tyrannies. Democracies are suppose to be hated by the fascists and tyrannies in this world. If not, we are not doing our job. Our enemies should fear our resolve, not vice versa, as Obama and the United Nations would have us believe.
Let’s face it. Obama is making his own case that his “freedom agenda” is the greatest threat to America, Israel, and the free world. He needs no help from us to prove his point.
Now that Egypt has declared her independence from a tyrant, and other nations in the Middle East are following suit, Israel is facing an imminent threat. A threat that is no less dangerous than the one Iran poses.
It is not Egypt, Russia, China or the United Nations that poses this threat. It is not even the possibility that Egypt will no longer honor the peace treaty with Israel. It is Obama and only Obama that poses this threat. What is coming next for Israel was not only predictable, but frightening!
Prior to the uprising in Egypt and throughout the Middle East, the Palestinians positioned themselves to use the United Nations to pressure Israel to yield to their demands. We had a preview of the outcome since initially Obama would not announce if he would veto the Palestinians objective at the UN. Why not? Did he have to wait for permission from the PLO, or the Russians? If not, then who? Why was Obama hedging his bets?
Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) and sixteen Senate colleagues wrote to Obama. They urged the opposite course: that was on January 23 – my bet was that Gillibrand would never hear back from him personally on this matter, but they did get an earful Friday when Israel got blindsided by Obama. His mouth piece, Susan E. Rice, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, said the veto should not be misconstrued as American support for further settlement construction, which the United States opposes.
Now that Obama has dropped the UN Peace Bomb on Israel what is in next? Will it be Obama’s position that because the nations in the region are seeking freedom, the United States and the Islamic world must avail itself of this great opportunity, and resolve the Israeli Palestinian conflict Now!!-- Then America and the Islamic world can work unilaterally to achieve peace in the region, gain a peaceful co-existence between our nations, and rebuff any who would use the Israeli Palestinian conflict to derail this noble undertaking, This will be our best and last chance, we must move forward. G-d forbid if this were the case, if so Israel would buy the farm.
The Israel –Palestinian conflict has no bearing on whether the Islamic world will be successful in their quest to secure their freedoms .If the Islamic world is truly serious in their quest to embrace democracy and freedom from tyrants and terrorists, why don’t they stand with Israel against the Palestinians? Why is the onus on Israel to make peace with criminal enterprises which refuse to recognize the Jewish State are hell bent on her destruction, in order to prevent a world war between America and the Islamic world.
Under what pretext did the nation of Israel become not only expendable, but also a hindrance to the Free World’s attempts to live in peace with the tyrannical nations of the Arab states? Was it because our leaders believed that in order to win the hearts and gain the trust of the majority of the Muslims in the region, they had to cater to their belief that Israel is a terrorist state and the “Palestinian” Arab people are the victims? Has it been a show of good faith to the Islamic world that leaders such as Obama continue to limit Israel’s response to suicide bombers and other attacks on her, as well as the Iranian threat?
Did Reagan first wait to win the hearts and minds in the communist nations when he declared, “Tear down this wall?”
The truth is Islamic tyranny is the real threat to world security, not the Israeli-Arab conflict, and most certainly not Israel
It is time to put to rest the insidious notion put forth by Obama and Mahmoud Abbas, and embraced by the Islamic community, the UN, and the world at large. This notion is that the Israeli-Arab conflict is the root cause for the tensions between the Islamic world and the United States – not the Islamic world’s addiction to the edicts of religious tyrannies hateful decrees. This misconception has spawned the idea that resolution will bring reconciliation between our nations resulting in a peaceful co-existence and economic security for America and her allies. Nothing can be further from the truth
On Friday Obama dropped the UN Peace Bomb on Israel. Now it is time to drop the American peace bomb on him. No more requests or impassioned pleas to change his position on Israel as Sen. Gillibrand found out. We the people must step up to the plate; we must lead because our leaders are in disarray. We must demand that Obama step up and follow a foreign policy that honors America’s core values. Or step down. The Egyptians got Mubarak to step down. Nixon resigned under great pressure. Why not Obama? He wanted Mubarak to step down, he did. Why not Obama? Keep the pressure on. The year 2012 will be too late – for America, Israel, and the free world.
Contact your Senators and Congressmen. Contact the White House. Go to www.firstgov.gov click “Contact Government”, then click “Contact Your Elected Officials”. Then flood their switchboards. Tell them:
“I am calling to demand that President Obama once again Honors Israel, Freedom, and Americas’ Core Values-- or Steps Down NOW. Not tomorrow, not the next day, NOW.”
