Greece Detains Canadian Flotilla Ship
Challah Hu Akbar
These people are simply stupid. They knew what had happened to the American ship on Friday and the Greeks had warned them not to test them again. Also, Greece had offered to take the aid under UN supervision, an offer that Israel had accepted the offer.
Instead of heading the warnings, and accepting the Greek offer, these flotidiots left port in an attempt to make their way to Gaza. Well, the Greeks held by their word and detained the ship. The Canadian ship "Tahrir", participating in the flotilla to Gaza, attempted to depart Monday from the Greek port of Agios Nikolaos, but was intercepted by the Greek coast guard shortly after departure.
The Greek coast guard sprayed water on the ship in an attempt to deter the activists, and eventually boarded the Canadian ship after the Greek authorities had banned the departure of all ships to Gaza from its ports.
Maan News adds the following:
Greek coastguards halted the Canadian vessel Tahrir about 10 minutes after it left port on the island of Crete Monday afternoon with some 40 people on board, organisers said.
"We have been boarded by about 15 armed special forces," David Heap of the Canadian Boat to Gaza organization said by phone from the vessel.
"I'm being blocked by a man with a machine gun," he said over the noise of shouting from passengers he said were being pushed around. "We are not using force back," he added.
The Tahrir, which was carrying activists from Canada, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Turkey, was forced to turn back to Aghios Nikolaos port in Crete, as Heap and others shouted, "We have to go to Gaza. Let us pass!"
It had sailed without a captain in the hope of avoiding a severe legal repercussions.
Passenger Joseph Dube, a former Belgium senator with an expired captain's licence, had sailed the ship and agreed to take full legal responsibility, according to the Tahrir's spokesperson Huwaida Arraf.
When authorities boarded the boat and demanded to speak to the captain, some 30 passengers "claimed they were the captain," she said.
"Everyone took part in manning the boat in one way or another -- they all had a go at sailing it. The idea is that it will be difficult to arrest 30 people," she said.
Currently, the Greeks have arrested Sandra Ruch, lead organizer and owner of the Canadian ship. In addition, the flotards had two kayakers "protecting" their boat as they left port, those two kayakers were also arrested. The flotidiots claim that Greece had no right to stop their ship even though it was still in Greek waters. They also claim their ship was slammed into a concrete pier, damaging the oil tank. In related new, the captain of the American ship will have a hearing in court tomorrow at Noon Athens time.
While all of this the French boat, well one of them, staged a mock sailing.
Update: Amira Hass says:
The Tahrir's steering crew said in a statement to Haaretz that Greek supporters holding a vigil on the pier notified the passengers aboard the ship that their safety may be at risk. The statement added that the crew holds Greek authorities responsible should the ship be sabotaged.
The Canadian vessel is currently without electrical power and has not been authorized to restart its generator that is in working order. The lack of power prevents those on board the Tahrir from using sanitary facilities or refrigeration, and they remain without lighting for security.
Paranoid much?
