Sexual Contradictions in Islam

Vin Ienco

Earlier this month, the Toronto Star reported that people from Canada’s largest city, took to the streets to celebrate gay pride. To coincide with this event, Toronto’s Somali-born Imam, Sheikh Said Rageah headed the annual Journey of Faith conference at the nearby Metro Convention Center. The conference has proven to be a controversial event, when last year a visiting speaker professed his solidarity with Osama bin Laden. Rageah has defended his speakers and argued that they are entitled to free speech, thought he failed to mention the fact that free speech is a privilege rarely experienced in the Islamic world. This year’s event was no less controversial with the key speaker being Toronto resident, Abu Ameenah Bilal Phillips. Born in Jamaica as Dennis Bradley Phillips, he converted to Islam in 1972. He is considered an "Unindicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. In a recent interview, Phillips reiterated his views on homosexuality by happily condoning death as punishment for men who confess to homosexual behavior or are seen performing homosexual acts by four reliable witnesses, in countries governed by Islamic law.

“In secular countries like Canada,” he said, “Even gays should not be punished. But the word of the Qur’an must be followed in Islamic countries and the Qur’an says gays must be killed. In a country that has subscribed to secular rule, like Canada, that’s how it is. I accept that. But if you ask me what would the situation be within an Islamic state, or Islamic government, then it would not be permitted, and the punishment is applied, yes.”

Phillips spoke of ‘four reliable witnesses’, an Islamic standard that also applies to a woman proving rape. This is yet another example of Mohammed changing the rules as the situation dictates, to further his personal agenda. The Hadith of Bukhari (5:59:462) explains that Mohammeds’ child bride, Aisha, was accused of adultery. Mohammed denied the accusation and refused to believe it to be so. His solution was to establish an arbitrary rule that four witnesses are required.

Contradictions

Homosexuality in Islam is very clearly condemned in the Koran. It is considered a more severe transgression than adultery or ‘zina’ (extramarital and premarital sex). The most severe punishment is reserved for these types of transgressors.

Koran (Yusufali) 026.166: "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)!"

Koran 4:16: "If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, leave them alone.”

With the evidence from its holy verse, we can conclude that homosexuality is condemned in Islam. Despite this, Mohammed in his infinite wisdom made sure that homosexuals were catered for in the great orgy of the Islamic after-life. Death for the cause of Islam, often referred to as the sixth pillar of Islam by some Sunni scholars, is the only way to reach this ‘paradise’.

Koran 52:24:“And round them shall go boys of theirs as if they were hidden pearls.”

Koran 76:19: “And round about them shall go boys never altering in age; when you see them you will think them to be scattered pearls.”

Adding to the ever growing list of Imams in the UK convicted of raping boys, in July this year a well respected Imam from London, Mohammed Hanif Khan, was convicted of raping a 12 year old boy and molesting another 15 year old. Khan had raped the 12 year old on at least 5 different occasions, between July 1 and October 16, 2009.

In September 2009, The Guardian newspaper reported that a lost ancient tradition of the Taliban in Afghanistan was back. The practice of ‘bacha bazi’ (boy for play) involves boys performing an ‘enticing’ dance routine for private parties held by Afghan men. The dance itself could be likened to the ‘dace of the veils’. Though, in the Afghan version a fresh young male face is revealed with the removal of the last veil, concluding the dance.

The bacha dancers are often abused children whose families have rejected them. Their ‘owners’ or ‘masters’ can be single or married men, who keep them in a form of sexual slavery, as concubines. The bachas are usually released at the age of 19.

In November 2007, Reuters filed an in-depth report on the Bacha sex-slaves:

"Everyone tries to have the best, most handsome and good-looking boy," said a former Mujahadeen commander, who declined to be named. "Sometimes we gather and make our boys dance and whoever wins, his boy will be the best boy." Former Mujahadeen commanders hold such parties in and around Pul-e Khumri about once a week.

"Having a boy has become a custom for us. Whoever wants to show off should have a boy," said Enayatullah, a 42-year-old landowner in Baghlan province. "I was married to a woman 20 years ago, she left me because of my boy," he said. "I was playing with my boy every night and was away from home, eventually my wife decided to leave me. I am happy with my decision, because I am used to sleeping and entertaining with my young boy."

The men say they lavish money and gifts on their boys.
