Omri Ceren-blast from the past
Before we get to this out-of-nowhere, who-could-have-known LAT political analysis, check out this lede from JPost:
An Obama administration would cultivate close relations with Israel, but also hear out elements who discomfit many American Jewish groups – including the Iranian leadership and those calling for more balance in US mediation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict… “I don’t consider myself in any camp other than the common sense camp,” he said, when asked if he favors those who see the Israel alliance as uppermost or those who advocate greater balance. “It is dangerously simplistic to think that our only options with respect to US foreign policy are to be unquestioning in our approach to Israel-Palestinian relations or alternatively to fail to recognize the special relationship and the historic friendship and bonds that exist between the United States and Israel.”… The senator did not shy away from a defense of Jeremiah Wright Jr., his former pastor whose closeness to positions and individuals considered anathema to Jews has stirred controversy, or from his insistence on reaching out to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and listening closely to Palestinian complaints. He certainly has the law school star student knack for picking up and repeating the language of his professors. First he parroted the likes of Walt, Mearsheimer, and his adviser Brzezinski by smearing anyone to the right of him as a radical “Likud supporter” – as if Egypt got the Sinai back and Israel withdrew from Gaza under a left-wing Labor Prime Minister. Now he’s wallowing in the nudge-wink game of tearing down the US-Israel alliance under the guise of “questioning our approach” – because there’s no controversy about Israel in American public discourse. But these code words give him plausible deniability with liberal Jews desperate to hold on to their shallow ideological affiliations. We were at a talk given by the ultra-left editor of a far-left but very prominent New York Jewish publication a few weeks ago. A woman raised her hand and hesitantly begged “I’m already voting for Obama so this doesn’t matter, but I’d feel better if he had any answer to these accusations – please tell me he does.” Then the speaker rattled off some nonsense about how most Israelis want to give away land and that was that. Really.
But for everyone not desperately trying to ignore Obama’s obvious anti-Israel animus, the Senator’s views are pretty clearly:
It was a celebration of Palestinian culture — a night of music, dancing and a dash of politics. Local Arab Americans were bidding farewell to Rashid Khalidi, an internationally known scholar, critic of Israel and advocate for Palestinian rights, who was leaving town for a job in New York. A special tribute came from Khalidi’s friend and frequent dinner companion, the young state Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi’s wife, Mona, and conversations that had challenged his thinking… His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been “consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases…”… “I am confident that Barack Obama is more sympathetic to the position of ending the occupation than either of the other candidates,” said Hussein Ibish, a senior fellow for the American Task Force on Palestine, referring to the Israeli presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that began after the 1967 war… “That’s my personal opinion,” Ibish said, “and I think it for a very large number of circumstantial reasons, and what he’s said.”
2010 will eventually roll around and newspapers will be publishing ledes like “some analysts suggest that the Obama White House is facing the most significant crisis in American-Israeli relations in decades.” In a desperate attempt to absolve themselves of their own pretentious complicity in the international ostracism of the Jewish State, the 75 percent of American Jews who voted for Obama will join the rest of the left in scapegoating Israel. The alternative would be to admit that every honest observer with half a brain recognized Obama’s openly declared intention to blame Israel for Arab intransigence – and that, quite simply, will not happen.
