Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon called U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Wednesday to clarify remarks he made earlier this week which were perceived as being critical of American foreign policy.
This is the second time in recent months that
Ya'alon has caused friction with the U.S. over comments he made. Two
months ago, he caused a storm when he described U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's quest for Israeli-Palestinian peace as messianic and obsessive.

On Monday, speaking at an event in Tel Aviv, Ya'alon said Israel could not rely on the U.S. to take the lead in confronting Iran over its nuclear program. He also pointed to Ukraine crisis as an example of the U.S. "showing weakness."
Ya'alon also said of U.S. aid to Israel, "It isn't a favor America is doing, it's in their interest."
The defense minister's comments were broadcast on Channel 2 on Wednesday.
Ya'alon's comments did not go unnoticed in
Washington, with Kerry calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to
speak about the issue.
A source close to Ya'alon said some in the U.S. consider Ya'alon "a hindrance" and are looking to harm his popularity.
On Wednesday, Ya'alon's office put out a statement saying that Ya'alon had spoken with Hagel about the controversial comments.
"There was no opposition or criticism or
intention to offend the United States or our relations in my remarks,"
Ya'alon told Hagel, according to the statement.
"The strategic ties between our countries have
a supreme importance, as do our personal ties and mutual interests,"
Ya'alon said.
Hagel, according to the statement, thanked Ya'alon for his explanation.
"I appreciate our personal relationship and
the relations between our countries, and appreciate what you said about
the commitment to those relations," Hagel was quoted as saying.
Netanyahu has not publicly commented on
Ya'alon's remarks, but in a Knesset speech on Wednesday, he said, "The
United States was and remains our greatest ally."
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki
said on Wednesday that Kerry had told Netanyahu that Ya'alon's remarks
do not reflect the reality.
"Clearly [Ya'alon's] comments were not
constructive," she told reporters. White House spokesman Jay Carney
echoed Psaki's assessment of Ya'alon's remarks.
Meanwhile, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon
said Wednesday that if the fourth stage of the prisoner release takes
place as planned at the end of the month, he would resign.
Some 30 MKs from both coalition and opposition
parties signed a letter Wednesday calling on Netanyahu not to go ahead
with the fourth stage of the prisoner release. They protested the lack
of a plan to also free Jewish prisoners jailed for carrying out crimes
against Palestinians.
Palestinian Authority Prisoners' Affairs
Minister Issa Qaraqe said Wednesday that the fourth stage of the release
will be a measure of Israel's dedication to the peace negotiations. An
official from the Palestinian Authority's Prisoners' Affairs Ministry
told Israel Hayom that "if Israel delays the fourth stage [of the
prisoner release], at that instant, the negotiations will end."
At the Knesset on Wednesday, Netanyahu said about the
peace talks with the Palestinians, "We want to achieve peace, but not at
any price. We have fundamental stances that we safeguard."
Comment: Typical weakness displayed by the Obama team-one cannot accept the idea that it can be criticized. A strong administration, secure in its own set of beliefs and policies would simply understand that allies sometimes disagree. This USA administration is so insecure, impotent and self absorbed it is unable to step away from any comments that challenge its decisions, actions and policies. This is really an attempt by the Obama gang to curtail any challenging discussion-a lingusitc tactic used by so many. It also makes
